A Tribute to Three Special Levittown Veterans

Polly Dwyer, president of the Levittown Historical Society, highlights three of Levittown's most treasured veterans.

As a town built for veterans after World War II, Veterans Day has a special place in the Levittown community. Polly Dwyer, president of the Levittown Historical Society, has provided Levittown Patch with photographs and brief biographies on three veterans who are especially significant to Levittown in honor of this holiday.

William J. Levitt: Levitt was the president of Levitt & Sons. After serving in World War II in the Navy's Construction Battalions, he returned to the family construction company. It was decided to build affordable housing just for the World War II veterans, and so Levittown was born. Five years and 17,447 houses later, Levittown became world famous.

Steve Buczak: A World War II belly gunner in the Army Air Force, Buczak returned to Levittown to establish a window washing company. They washed all the new Levitt house windows. In his retirement he edited many books on histories of local towns and donated the books to the local libraries. The Levittown Public Library and the Levittown Historical Society were among the recipients. He soon joined the Levittown Historical Society and became a board member and then an officer for few years. He assisted Lynne Mattarrese in the society's  book "The History of Levittown, NY".

Mary Wanser: Wanser was a lady Marine during World War II. She was also a popular longtime Levittown resident and Levittown school teacher. She was in many Levittown organizations.

All of these veterans are honored with a display at the Levittown Historical Museum at 150 Abbey Lane. Visit www.levittownhistoricalsociety.org for more information.
