Cyclones Whip Past Division Boys Lacrosse

South Side outscored the Blue Dragons, 13-3.

Coming off a loss to the Wantagh Warriors, the Division Blue Dragons (1-3 in Conference II, 4-6 overall) were hoping to bounce back with a win against the South Side Cyclones (4-0 in Conference II, 7-3 overall) on Friday.

South Side's Bryan Gerrato made sure that wouldn't happen, starting off the game by firing three balls into the net himself.

Gerrato went on to score four goals and assist one, forming an unstoppable duo with Pat Finnerty, who scored three with two assists. The Cyclones put four on the board in the first period, and the Blue Dragons were only able to answer with one.

Division looked like they were gathering their strength in the second period, scoring two goals to South Side's three. However the three goals in the first half by Sean Fechtmann, Shane McLaughlin and Tom Nuckel, who also had an assist, would be Division's last.

Division goalie Tom McDevitt fought through a complete game with nine saves against the sharp shooting Cyclones, and Jake Gaspari applied constant pressure on defense for his men in blue.

It just wasn't enough, as seven of South Side's tireless offenders contributed to the scoreboard. In addition to the damage done by powerhouses Gerrato and Finnerty, Eric Gennari  scored two goals and Zach Scaduto, Peter Clarke, Billy Moore and Stephen Tita added one each, resulting in a 13-3 victory for the Cyclones.

"We've been preaching about the level of intensity and focus, and we just didn't have that in the last three or four games," said Cyclone head coach Steve DiPietro. "In this game we really responded to that; we had that intensity from the get go, and I'm proud of the way we played from the first whistle."

Division head coach Jim Kern has high hopes for the Blue Dragons heading into next week.

"This was our toughest week," Kern said, as his fourth seed team faced second seed Wantagh and third seed South Side back to back. "We should be able to catch up against the teams we're facing next."
