Island Trees, MacArthur Girls Set for Basketball Playoffs

Island Trees takes on top-ranked North Shore at noon Tuesday; third-ranked MacArthur hosts Herricks Wednesday.

Two of Levittown's six high school basketball teams will play county quarterfinal games over the next two days.

The Island Trees girls basketball team is up first. The eighth-seeded Lady Bulldogs will face top-ranked North Shore at noon Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs were 10-2 in regular season Conference A-IV play, with their only two losses coming to North Shore.

Island Trees reached the quarterfinals after a 44-38 win over Manhasset in the first round Thursday night.

The team's strong defense played a key factor in the win as Allie Merrill, Nicole Pellegrino, Sharam Sanchez and Cassie Paskins held the Indians to one fourth-quarter basket. Maggie Milonakis sealed the win by hitting six of eight free throws down the stretch.

The third-seeded MacArthur Lady Generals will have their turn Wednesday night. They host sixth-seeded Herricks in a Class AA quarterfinal.

The Lady Bulldogs were one of four teams to receive a first-round bye. Led by Courtey Noakes and Jena Cozza, MacArthur was 12-2 in conference play this season (Conference AA-II). Their only two losses came at the hands of top-ranked Baldwin.

The Island Trees girls were the only local team to win a first-round playoff game last week. The Division girls lost at Wantagh, while a comeback attempt from the MacArthur boys came up just short in a loss at Freeport.
