UPDATE: 11-Year-Old Arrested in Connection with Hicksville Fire

Child charged with arson in the Saturday blaze which destroyed two structures.

Nassau County Police have arrested an 11-year-old boy in connection with a Hicksville blaze that left 12 people homeless, according to police.

The fire began in the garage of the house and spread to the main structure, East Meadow First Assistant Chief Nick Corrado said.

The Levittown Fire Department (LFD) was called to a four-alarm blaze on E. John Street in Hicksville at 1:48 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The LFD joined the East Meadow, Hicksville, Westbury and Jericho Fire Departments on the scene. 150 firefighters with 15 pieces of apparatus were there to fight the fire. Three of the firefighters were injured with "minor heat related injuries." They were treated at the scene.

The child utilized a Bic lighter to ignite some plastic packing material. This led to the entire garage on the property of 53 E. John Street catching fire, police said. The 11-year-old left the scene of the incident before the flames completely engulfed the structure.

Twelve residents who were displaced by the fire are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
