Island Trees Grad Returns From National Tour with Giants at Large

Drummer CJ Kostaras spoke with Patch about the band's upcoming album and life on the road.

Pop-punk quartet Giants at Large have returned home to Long Island from their second country-wide tour and are now shifting focus toward their debut full length album. Formed in 2010 after their first venture into the music scene fell apart, Giants at Large is made up of CJ Kostaras of Bethpage, Matt Lagattuta of East Meadow, Brian Thomann of Mineola and Anthony Pasini of Hicksville. The band set out early this year on tour from California and worked their way back to The Vibe Lounge in Rockville Centre. "Being on the road with your best friends and seeing people screaming all your words is a great feeling," said Kostaras, a 2009 graduate of Island Trees High School, "but I did learn a lot being on that tour. Pauly Shore Performs for Large Crowd at Governor's

Famed comedian brought his new material to Levittown stage Tuesday.

Governor's Comedy Club was a packed house Tuesday night for Los Angeles-based actor and comedian Pauly Shore. Shore caught his big break in the late 1980s as an MTV VJ and soon went on to host his own series Totally Pauly until 1994. In those same years, Shore also rose to the top of the comedy scene with roles in hit films like Encino Man, Son in Law, In the Army Now and Bio-Dome. A Beverly Hills native, Shore said his passion for comedy stems back to his early childhood as his parents' careers always stood out as his biggest inspiration.  "I was born into it with my parents," said Shore, 44. "My dad is a comedian and my mom owns The Comedy Store, so I've been around it forever. I did my first stand-up gig when I was 17." Shore is …

Pauly Shore to Perform at Governor's Tuesday

The comedian will perform a show at 8 p.m.

Comedian Pauly Shore will perform at Governor's Comedy Club on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Shore was previously a VJ on MTV and starred in several feature films in the 1990s. According to his bio on the Governor's website, he will have a 90-minute variety special air on Showtime this fall. Shore posted a video to YouTube to publicize his Tuesday show. Tickets range in price from $28 to $58. This upcoming weekend, comedian Carlos Mencia will perform four shows at Governor's. He will perform Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Levittown Comedy Duo to Participate in LI Competition

Issacs and Baker are finalists in the Got Talent? Long Island competition.

A Levittown comedy duo will participate in the finals of the Got Talent? Long Island competition later this month. The Huntington Arts Council named Isaacs and Baker one of 19 acts that qualified for the finals of the competition. The finals will take place on March 30 in front of a panel of celebrity judges. Al Isaacs and Scott Baker teamed up five years ago after originally performing solo acts at East Side Comedy in Huntington. Together, they've raised over a half a million dollars for causes such as the FealGood Foundation (for Sept. 11 first responders), special needs children and local fire and police organizations. The March 30 show will take place at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College. It will start at 7:30 …

Division, Island Trees Students to Perform Musicals This Weekend

Both schools will be performing shows of "Beauty and the Beast."

Both Division Avenue High School and Island Trees High School will host student productions of "Beauty and the Beast" over the next three days. Division will host four performances of their version of the play. There will be performances Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m., with a matinée performance also scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for senior citizens and $10 for all other attendees and will be sold at the door. Island Trees will run three performances of their own rendition of "Beauty and the Beast" on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Friday and Saturday's performances will be at 7 p.m. while Thursday's performance will be a 3 p.m. matinée for seniors. All performances will be in the auditorium of each …

Island Trees Students "On Display" at All-County Exhibition Mr. Peter Gibbons, Island Trees District Director of Fine & Performing Arts, is proud to announce a list of students chosen to have their art work displayed at the 8th Annual All-County Art Exhibition to be held at Adelphi University. Comic Legend Jim Breuer Headlines Three Night Run at Governor's

Acclaimed performer returned to his Long Island home.

Levittown's Governor's Comedy Club was a packed house this past weekend as legendary comic Jim Breuer hit the stage with local performers for a sold out crowd. A Long Island native, Breuer started his comedy career performing standup in small comedy clubs across the country and rose to fame with a stoner-role in the hit 1998 comedy Half Baked and his recurring role on NBC's "Saturday Night Live". In an interview with Patch last August when Breuer featured his new Heavy Metal Man act at Mulcahy's Pub and Concert Hall, he explained how his recent material aligns more with his family life as a parent of two in Morris County, New Jersey. Levittown Dance Academy Recognized As Advocate for the Arts

5 6 7 8 Dance has dedicated the last 13 years to education in the world of dance.

After traveling to New York City for dance instruction, Levittown native Jennifer Levine knew she wanted to share her knowledge and expertise with young dancers in her hometown. Levine opened up 5 6 7 8 Dance with her mother in 1999 and has strived to provide up-and-coming dancers with a top-notch education. This year, the Long Island Arts Council in Freeport has selected Levine and her dance company as a recipient at the Top 25 Advocates for the Arts Awards. "It's really an honor," said Levine, a graduate of Levittown's Division Avenue High School. "I was so excited and extremely proud. Local Singer-Songwriter Makes Television Debut

Since her days at Division Avenue High School, singer-songwriter Samantha Smith has dreamed of making a breakthrough with her music. Nearly nine years later, the Levittown native has made her television debut on a local series offering a forum for artists of all kinds to strut their stuff. Smith appeared on Cablevision's Talent Showcase last Sunday evening and her performance is set to air again Jan. 22 and Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. on Cablevision's channel 20. Young Playwright Executes First Full Length Production at Island Trees

Kina Higgins was honored last week for The Average Lives of Wayton High.

Island Trees senior Kina Higgins made history this fall when the high school drama club produced "The Average Lives of Wayton High", a full-length production written by Higgins over the last two years. "The Average Lives of Wayton High", a heartfelt piece filled with several storylines touching on the hardships teenagers face daily, was showcased at Island Trees late in November. When the time came to approach the drama department, Higgins said that she was extremely honored they took it on, and couldn't be happier with the final product.
