Levittown School Board Candidate Profile: Ed Powers

Incumbent is running uncontested for his second three-year term.

Ed Powers was elected to the Levittown Board of Education three years ago with hopes of guiding a rapidly growing district to better financial control. With a 2 percent tax cap looming state-wide, Powers feels it is still important to focus on his initial goal as he prepares to enter his second three-year term. The district made major cuts within the instructional staff at the end of the 2010-11 school year that made this year's budget planning process a bit easier. "This year's budget was more about looking forward and measuring the on-going impact of changes made last year," said Powers, who is running unopposed in the 2012-13 election. "All districts are in survival mode because of the tax cap. Levittown got ahead of it last year and …

Federal Judges Change Peter King's District

Three Judge panel approves map that will take away northern part of lawmaker's district.

Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford, will see his Congressional district change considerably under a new map that has been approved by a three-judge Federal Court panel. The judges adopted a map drawn by lower court judge Roanne Mann a week ago after state lawmakers did not come up with a redistricting plan that reflects the results of the 2010 census. "Like the census that triggers it, this argument is now raised in federal courts at predictable 10-year intervals," the judges wrote in their decision Monday, addressing the lawsuit by voters who argued that the state was doing harm to their right to participate in upcoming elections. The panel noted in past years New York has implemented a plan at the last minute to avoid having judges draw the map…

Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology Center Still Planned for Former ICC Site

Councilman Gary Hudes says that the application is in front of the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency.

Over a year ago, the Israel Community Center was torn down. At the time, the Levittown Patch reported that a Zwanger-Pesiri radiology clinic was rumored to be moving in. More than a year later, that is still the plan. In a press release about Levittown Ford's grand opening last week, the Town included a sentence that said "A neighboring vacant property that once housed a synagogue will soon be the new home for the prestigious Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology clinic." "Unfortunately, the Israel Community Center for a period of time visually was in disrepair while it was empty after the temple had closed up," said Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes. "Now, with the demolition of the building, the property has been kept clean." Hempstead Town …

Belesi Wins Nassau Legislature Seat

More than one month after Election Day, the winner of District 14 has been declared.

Republican incumbent Joseph Belesi has been officially re-elected to the 14th district seat of the Nassau County Legislature after a month-long counting of absentee ballots and machine audit. A judge certified his win over Democratic challenger Eva Pearson on Monday. The final vote tally was not immediately available from the Board of Elections, but Belesi said he was told he won by 107 votes, which gives Republicans a 10-9 majority in the legislature. "It's a win for the people of Nassau County," Belesi said on Monday. "It was a difficult month and a difficult campaign with many personal attacks, but I tried to stay above it all and plan to continue to do what I've doing, working to control the tax situation." Since Election Day, when …

Sorry Merrick7, but respect is EARNED. Belesi has not earned respect as a county legislator. Belesi is a puppet of Schmitt and wouldn't utter a single independent thought. Never has, never will.   more ›

Update: County Race Continues into December

The parties appeared before a New York State Supreme Court judge on Tuesday.

The race between Joseph Belesi and Eva Pearson for the District 14 seat of the Nassau Legislature continues into December, with a judge ruling Tuesday for officials to narrow down the ballot challenges. As of Friday, the election commissioners narrowed down the challenged ballots that the judge must rule on from 114 to 40, and Belesi was ahead by 108 votes. All results are unofficial until representatives appear next before the judge on Dec. 5. After more than 500 absentee ballots were counted by the Nassau County Board of Elections early last week, incumbent Republican Belesi was ahead by 85 votes for the seat. There were 114 ballots challenged during the counting that the judge had to rule on before a winner can be named. According to …

County Race Update: Belesi Leads Pearson by 85 Votes

Judge will declare race for 14th Legislative District early next week.

Incumbent Republican Joseph Belesi is ahead by 85 votes for the District 14 seat after more than 500 absentee ballots were counted by the Nassau County Board of Elections this week. "114 were challenged during the recount and they will be ruled on by the judge early next week," said William Biamonte, the Democratic commissioner at the Board of Elections. On Monday, the Board of Elections began counting the paper ballots. Both parties were allowed to have representatives present as the board checked if the application for the ballot and the voter's signature on the registration card matched. Since Election Day, the Board of Elections called back all the voting machines and suitcases and inventoried absentee and affidavit ballots by …

County Race: Ballot Counting for District 14 Slated for Monday

The outcome of the race between Joseph Belesi and Eva Pearson will be decided by ballots.

The counting of more than 500 absentee and affidavit ballots in District 14 could start Monday morning, according to commissioners at the Nassau County Board of Elections. "We're doing it methodically," said William Biamonte, the Democratic commissioner. He said the judge has agreed for the counting to begin pending some procedural things get done today. The race to represent the 14th district of the Nassau County Legislature between Democratic challenger Eva Pearson and Republican incumbent Joe Belesi ended too close to call on Election night, prompting this counting of absentee votes and a recount of all non-scanned ballots. The 14th district covers parts of North Massapequa, East Massapequa, Seaford, North Wantagh, Levittown, Old …

County Race: 494 Absentee Ballots to Count

Close margin between Joseph Belesi and Eva Pearson race prompts recount.

The votes of nearly 500 absentee ballots and a recount will decide who represents the 14th district of the Nassau County Legislature, the Board of Elections confirmed Wednesday. "I did expect this given the history of the seat," said Eva Pearson, the Democrat challenging Republican incumbent Joseph Belesi for the spot. "It has always been a close, tight race." New York State Board of Elections spokesman Tom Connelly said a total of 799 absentee ballots were sent out in the 14th district, and 494 of those ballots have been submitted. He said that not all may have been received yet, since military ballots can be received up to 13 days after the election as long as the ballot is postmarked before Nov. 8. "I'm feeling very confident going into…

UPDATED: Fate of Nassau Legislature Hangs on District 14

Democrats call for a recount after Belesi beat Pearson by less than .5 percent.

A recount of the race between incumbent Republican Joseph Belesi and Democratic challenger Eva Pearson will decide whether the Democrats take over the Nassau County Legislature. Belesi beat Pearson by just 51 votes in Tuesday's election for the 14th district seat, prompting Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs to call for a recanvassing of all voting machines. The 14th district covers parts of East Massapequa, North Massapequa, Seaford, North Wantagh, Levittown, Old Bethpage, Bethpage, Plainedge, Farmingdale and South Farmingdale. Just before midnight, Belesi led Pearson 54 percent to 45 with 15 precincts counted. The margin steadily decreased and closed with Belesi at 50.21 percent and Pearson at 49.75 percent. Belesi, R-Farmingdale, is a…
