Republicans Rip Democratic Minority, Mangano Pushes Sewer Privatization

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

Republicans Rip Democrats Over Voting The following is a joint statement from County Executive Ed Mangano, Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt and the Republican Legislative Caucus: "During the decade in which the Democrats controlled the County Legislature, Republicans put politics aside and provided the responsible votes necessary to run county government. Unfortunately for Nassau's taxpayers, the Democrat minority on the legislature is now refusing to implement a plan that forever ends borrowing for tax refunds while cleaning up debt created over the past decade.  If the Democrats do not provide the votes needed to pay residents their rightfully owed property tax refunds, judgments will be executed against the County’s bank accounts — …

Levittown School Board Candidate Profile: Ed Powers

Incumbent is running uncontested for his second three-year term.

Ed Powers was elected to the Levittown Board of Education three years ago with hopes of guiding a rapidly growing district to better financial control. With a 2 percent tax cap looming state-wide, Powers feels it is still important to focus on his initial goal as he prepares to enter his second three-year term. The district made major cuts within the instructional staff at the end of the 2010-11 school year that made this year's budget planning process a bit easier. "This year's budget was more about looking forward and measuring the on-going impact of changes made last year," said Powers, who is running unopposed in the 2012-13 election. "All districts are in survival mode because of the tax cap. Levittown got ahead of it last year and …

LPOA Weighs in on Crocus Lane, North Village Green Projects

Residents gathered against the commercial property proposals facing their neighborhood.

Construction projects on the grounds near Crocus Lane and the North Village Green have been weighing heavy on the minds of Levittown residents in recent months. The Levittown Property Owners Association (LPOA) gathered Tuesday night after an adjourned Town of Hempstead hearing regarding the Crocus Lane property where owners want to build a 50-unit senior housing development. The property is located on an empty parcel of land located alongside the Long Island Motor Parkway, which closed in 1938. Resident Victoria Johnson addressed LPOA with information from the adjourned hearing. She said an attendee in favor of the Crocus Lane project spoke out on the record despite the adjournment, so she did the same to provide a different perspective. "…

The Crocus Lane proposal to build a ‘Senior Housing Complex’ and its impact on the neighborhood is not the biggest issue. The bigger issue is the builder/owner’s application before the Town Board to change the zoning of this 2.55 acre parcel of land—which is surrounded on all four sides by single-family homes—from its current ‘Residential’ to ‘Special District’ zoning. This request is the builder…   more ›

Safety Improvements Announced for Hempstead Turnpike [POLL]

The New York State Department of Transportation has already implemented a numbers of safety initiatives for pedestrians.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced Monday a series of pedestrian safety improvements along Hempstead Turnpike as part of a multi-agency initiative to enhance safety along the dangerous thoroughfare. Since March of this year, the NYSDOT has made a variety of pedestrian safety improvements on Hempstead Turnpike, including remarking 235 crosswalks — more than half of which were widened — increasing pedestrian crossing times at 86 traffic signals, reprogramming dozens of crosswalks and adding new features to the crossing buttons. "Working cooperatively with our local, state and federal partners, we examined and analyzed the entire Hempstead Turnpike corridor this spring, developed a plan for enhancing pedestrian…

Durso: Redistricting Process Should Be Fair

A letter to the editor from the President of the Long Island Federation of Labor.

The following is from John R. Durso, President of the Long Island Federation of Labor: It is the bedrock of American democracy that every citizen's vote carries equal importance. Whether or not one's vote truly finds expression in the final count is largely impacted by redistricting, a process we go through every 10 years. While the subject typically fails to garner much public attention, insiders know there's a lot at stake. The way that voters are segregated into districts has an enormous influence on who our representatives are, and can ultimately shape public policies for the next decade. Historically, the task of redrawing district lines has been left to the hands of the very politicians whose political futures will be impacted. Too …

Until we have a preferential voting system that can properly handle more than two candidates, we'll continue to have scoundrels from both Ds and Rs playing with district lines and keeping themselves in office to spend most of their time putting down the other instead of cooperating to get things done. Since these two parties also control how the votes are counted, I cannot ever see that changing…   more ›

Crocus Lane Hearing to Be Adjourned Tuesday

Levittown Property Owner's Association will meet Tuesday night to discuss the project.

The attorney representing the Crocus Lane Estates, a proposed 50-unit senior housing development in Levittown, confirmed they will request an adjournment at Tuesday's meeting with the Hempstead Town Board, according to a town spokesperson.  The property is located on an empty parcel of land located alongside the Long Island Motor Parkway, which closed in 1938. Residents and the Levittown Property Owner's Association (LPOA) have said that they would like the the remnants preserved, rather than built on. William Cohn, the attorney representing Crocus Lane Estates, LLC, wants more time to discuss the proposal with neighbors, the spokesperson said. "This is the third time they've done this, it's been on and off," said Jim Morrow, President of …

County Eyes Private Partnership for Sewage System

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

On Thursday, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced a Debt Reduction and Sewer Stabilization Plan to eliminate $750 million -- 25 percent -- of the county's $3 billion debt. The plan also aims to stabilize Nassau County's Sewer Authority, which is set to face bankruptcy in 2014, as warned by the Nassau County Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) in its October 2009 report. The Debt Reduction and Sewer Stabilization Plan includes the implementation of a public-private partnership to operate and maintain Nassau's three wastewater treatment plants, which have fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair over the past decade, according to the county. The sewage treatment plants have racked up more than $1 million in Department of Environmental…

Letter to the Editor: Crocus Lane Project Will Negatively Affect Neighborhood

Levittown Resident Rick Ekberg shares his thoughts on the proposed Crocus Lane project.

The following is from Levittown resident Rick Ekberg. A letter to the editor: A builder has currently filed plans with the Hempstead Town Board to construct several condominium units in our neighborhood. The first units are proposed to be constructed on the lot between Orchid Road, Blacksmith Road and Crocus Lane. These condos will house about 51 double and single units with parking for about 90 vehicles. In order for the builder to proceed with such a project, the board of appeals must rule in favor of such a development. If the lot is allowed to be re-zoned by the board of appeals, this will set a precedence to construct similar condos on the lot between Orchid Road, Woodcock Lane, Skimmer Lane and Heron Lane, which the same builder also…

Totally against it. If they start building condos on every empty plot it's gonna feel like Queens. It will overcrowd our school system . they should be senior citizen housing only for current seniors who can't afford their homes anymore.$300,000 is not affortable if it passes I know I'm selling my house and leaving long island. We pay 10,000 a year in taxes to I've in surburban not congestion if …   more ›
