Business Q & A: Harmony Early Learning Center

The owner has applied for a special exception to convert a vacant Levittown building into a daycare center.

If all goes as planned, Levittown will be getting a new preschool and daycare center as early as this summer.

Patch recently spoke to Allison Ulin, owner/director of the Harmony Early Learning Center, which is in the process of renovating the vacant house at 148 Center Lane, next to Wisdom Lane Middle School.

Two weeks ago, the case went before the Town of Hempstead Zoning Board, as Ulin is seeking a special exception to convert the building into a daycare center. They would operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and employ eight staff members to care for the children.

When were you founded?

We purchased the property July 2012 and are in the process of renovating it inside and out. We anticipate our grand opening Summer 2013.

How did your business get started?

I've always enjoyed working with young children. I got my Bachelors in Elementary Education but went back to complete my Masters is Early Childhood Education when I realized my real passion was to work with younger children. I spent several years working as a Kindergarten and Pre-K teacher with the hopes of being able to open my own center one day.

I believe Early Childhood Education is more than just learning ABC's and 123's, it's helping students discover the world around them, socialize, problem solve, create, explore, and communicate. In addition, we incorporate music, art, languages, and technology into every classroom. Our programs prepare our students for a lifetime of learning.

Why did you choose the Levittown area?

I spent two years searching for the right location and finally came across the vacant YOM building. After hearing about the old Yours Ours Mine Community center and the services it provided in the past, the old YOM house seemed like the perfect place to offer childcare to the many families in Levittown.

What do you offer customers?

We offer a variety of childcare services. Parents can choose from full or half day Toddler, Preschool and Pre-K programs along with Mommy and Me classes, extended hours and a Summer program. We also offer all natural & organic snacks in our newly renovated facility.

Each classroom has 8 learning stations including: blocks, technology, music, dramatic play, art, reading, puzzles and toys, and a discovery table.

What do you want your business to best be known for?

Quality childcare in a safe and engaging atmosphere that offers organic and all natural snacks to promote healthy living. We want Harmony Early Learning Center to be a place where students have fun learning by exploring and discovering.
