Cuban Food Truck Brings New Flavor to Levittown

Rollin' Cubans offers a variety of authentic Cuban food.

If you’re looking for a different kind of food than what you're used to, just head over to the Office Max parking lot.

There you will find authentic Cuban food at the Rollin’ Cubans food truck, owned and operated by Hicksville resident Roberto Baez, a former chef in Oyster Bay.

Baez, who is half Cuban, landed in Levittown two and a half weeks ago, although he said it took him about 10 months to get everything going, including getting the permits to park in the current spot.

“I grew up eating it, my father cooked it,” Baez said of Cuban food. “I used to do Cuban specials as a chef, and they’d sell like crazy. It’s a strong, bold flavor. It’s comfort food.”

Baez said he chose the Levittown spot because it was close by, and because the size of the lot and the visibility on Hempstead Turnpike.

“I didn’t know it before, but I’m finding out that there is a decent sized Cuban population in Levittown,” Baez said.

Empanadas are the most popular item, according to Baez. “It’s a pastry, stuffed with any kind of meat and cheeses, and it’s fried.” They go for $2.50 each.

Also available are Cubano sandwiches for $8. They include roast pork and smoked ham, sloppy cuban style, all roast pork or mojo chicken style. Platters are $10 and include rice and beans and other sides.

Baez said you can find the truck in the Office Max parking lot Tuesday to Friday, usually from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. He added that sometimes he will be there on Saturdays, unless he has a private party or catering to do.

Levittown resident Annette Licatesi, who is half-Cuban, said she is a loyal customer. Licatesi said her grandmother used to cook her Picadillos, a ground-beef dish that's for sale at the truck.

“I love it, we get it every week now,” Licatesi said. “It’s authentic, unbelievable. It’s not something you’d see around here, you’d see it in Manhattan.”
