Levittown Walmart Market Under Construction

Grocery store will be the first ever on Long Island; Walmart rep says the store will provide boost to local economy.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market grocery store set to replace the vacant Walbaum's in Levittown is currently under construction and will be completed sometime in 2013, although no official opening date has been set yet.

Steven V. Restivo, Senior Director of Community Affairs for Walmart, said the new store will be the first one ever on Long Island and will provide customers with "a new, convenient choice for all their grocery shopping needs."

"Plus, we think the chance to revitalize a vacant property will deliver an added economic boost to the area," Restivo said.

The market, located in the Levittown Mew Shopping Center, is about one-third the size of a typical supercenter and the store will employ about 95 people and create about 100 new construction jobs, Restivo said.

The first Walmart Market opened in 1998 and there are currently 215 locations nationwide.

A permit was issued on July 2 for work to be done on the interior alterations and building facade, according to Hempstead Town Press Secretary Susan Trenkle-Pokalsky.

Restivo said it's too soon to tell when exactly the store will open.

The closest Walmart department store is located in East Meadow, just two miles west on Hempstead Turnpike.
