Democratic Pool for County Executive Slot Narrows

One week after Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced that she would run for her third term later this year, another potential Democratic candidate for county executive appears to have dropped out of contention.
Newsday's [paid link] Robert Brodsky reported Thursday evening that North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman is "not focused" on any kind of run for county executive in the November election.
"I am presently focused on my responsibilities as town supervisor and have not given much thought to a county executive run lately," Kaiman said in an email on Wednesday.
Still in the running for the Democrats is Legis. Dave Denenberg, D-Merrick.
Nassau Hurricane Recovery Fund Now Accepting Applications
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Friday that the Nassau Hurricane Recovery Fund (NHRF) is now accepting applications from Nassau County residents who are not entitled to financial reimbursement from FEMA, do not have homeowners or flood insurance, are not receiving assistance from other government relief program, or whose losses and damage far exceed insurance and/or FEMA coverage, may now apply for financial assistance from the Nassau Hurricane Recovery Fund.
A new website, https://apps.nassaucountyny.gov/recoveryfund/, was launched to help disseminate application forms to Hurricane Sandy victims and also further solicit donations from those citizens interested in helping their friends and neighbors in Nassau County that continue to struggle from storm damage. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano ordered flags on County government buildings to be flown at half-staff this week in honor of Plainview Fire Department Ex-Captain and Life Member Danny Levy who passed away from a 9-11 contracted illness.
“I join our citizens in mourning the loss of ex-captain and Life Member Danny Levy and send my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fellow brothers and sisters of the fire service,” Mangano said.

Mangano & North Shore Animal League America Announce Emergency Foster Care Referral Progra
Mangano and North Shore Animal League America announced Thursday an Emergency Foster Care Referral Program for pets who have fallen victim to Hurricane Sandy. The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) will utilize their resources to assist pet owners and potential foster parents to create an introduction so that homeless pets can be given a temporary home while their owners continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy.
Each foster applicant will be thoroughly screened by a NSALA fostering specialist and will be provided with a list of potential animals that match their criteria. Upon matching, owners will be given the information of the foster parents that match their criteria, so that they can determine who they would like to place their animal with and if they are amenable to the program. Any agreement will be made between the animal’s owner and the foster parent.
Nassau County has kept the shelter open to help ease the stresses of those affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy by offering temporary shelter for their displaced pets and providing care to ensure their safety and well-being. Currently there are more than 100 animals in the shelter, including dogs and cats, that are looking for foster homes.

Registration for Nassau Summer Recreation Program has Begun
Mangano announced this week that registration for Nassau County’s Summer Recreation Program for 2013 has begun. The 2013 Summer Recreation Program runs from July 1 – Aug. 8 (closed on July 4).
Nassau County’s Summer Recreation Program operates in five County Parks: Cantiague in Hicksville; Eisenhower in East Meadow; Grant Park in Hewlett; Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach; and Wantagh Park in Wantagh. The program is for children ages 5 to 12, separated in the following categories: early childhood (5-6); juniors (7-8); intermediate (9-10); and seniors (11-12). Parents can choose between two sessions for their children: either 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fees for the program range from $700 for one child for the shorter session to $850 for the full-day session, with discounts available for both sessions for additional children from the same family.
The registration deadline is June 1, 2013. There is a registration fee of $25 for returning campers (from 2012) who register by March 1, 2013, and a registration fee of $50 for new campers (regardless of registration date) and returning campers who apply after March 1, 2013. Registration fees are not refundable. If all final payments are not received by June 1, 2013, your spot in the program may be lost and the registration fee will not be refunded.
In addition to 45 minutes of open swim time at three of the parks, other activities include: arts and crafts, board and recreational games, Quick Start Tennis, 1st Tee Golf, and sports such as baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, Kan Jam, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and wiffle ball.
New for 2013 is a Multi-Sport camp, in affiliation with the U.S. Sports Institute, which will be offered at the conclusion of the Summer Recreation Program. This new program will run the weeks of Aug. 12 and Aug. 19. For further information please call (516) 572-0245.

Nassau Announces Training Programs for LI Marathon Weekend
Nassau County is once again teaming up the Greater Long Island Running Club to offer the RunSmart training program, which is designed to help residents prepare for the marathon, half-marathon or 10K race.
The first in a series of 14 training sessions for runners of all ability levels will begin Jan. 26 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and will be held on one day every weekend through April 27. Each session will be based at a different Nassau County Park under the direction of head coach Debbie Blair of the Greater Long Island Running Club, Bob Cook of The Runner’s Edge and a staff of coaches and trainers.
The cost for the entire RunSmart Program is $30.
