Levittown Man Arrested in Holbrook Hit-and-Run

The man was speeding and under the influence of drugs when he caused the accident, according to police.

A Levittown man was arrested on Friday after police said he fled the scene of a car accident that he caused in Holbrook on Sunrise Highway.  

James Byrnes, 26, was driving a 1999 Infiniti and speeding eastbound on Sunrise Hwy. when he crashed into a 44-year-old East Islip woman driving a Nissan Pathfinder at 12:06 p.m. Friday. The woman’s car flipped over several times and she was sent to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Witnesses saw the Infiniti was traveling at a fast rate of speed and called 911. Police said that officer Matthew Dewitt then spotted Byrnes traveling southbound on the William Floyd Parkway. Dewitt pulled Byrnes over and found controlled substances on him, according to police. 

Byrnes is being charged with first degree operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs and leaving injury accident, first offense.
