Memorial Day Celebrations, Festivals and Air Show

Every week, Patch will be bringing readers the best weekend activities for children in your area.

Glad you clicked on our Grab & Go Kids Planner!

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children. Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

Look for the kids’ planner each Wednesday, and help us build the planner with your own suggestions and tips — just add them to the comment box. Even if you disagree with our picks, let us know. We want to hear from you!

This week we have several Memorial Day celebrations, including street festivals, parades, military demonstrations and the annual Jones Beach Air Show. Check out the list below to see what’s going on in your area:

Why Go: Have the kids start the summer off right with a family friendly festival. There will be plenty of games, amusement park rides, food and even a petting farm. Admission and parking is free, making this a great time out for all.

2. Bellmore Spring Festival

3. Navy and Marine Corps Land and Air Demonstration
Where/When: Eisenhower Park in East Meadow; Saturday, May 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why Go: In honor of fleet week, the United States Marine Corp and Navy will be on hand in Eisenhower Park to show off some land and air demonstrations. The daring air maneuvers and impressive land vehicles will surely amaze the kids. Get the little ones outside during this exciting weekend and take advantage of the park after the show.

4. Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show
Where/When: Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh; Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Why Go: This annual air spectacular will captivate the little ones with impressive air stunts and high tech aircrafts. The United States Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, (possibly one of the coolest planes around!) will be performing for the audience, as well as an array of other old military crafts such as the B-17 Flying Fortress and A-10 Thunderbolt. This is especially perfect for those little pilots-in-training – the show will be an inspiration to them.
Pricing: Free to watch, but there is a $10 vehicle entry fee to the state park.

5. Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade
Where/When: Merrick Avenue and Lee Avenue in Merrick; Monday, May 30 starting at 9:30 a.m.
Why Go: What child doesn’t love a good parade? Come down and honor those who have served the United States with this annual function, which features veteran groups, the local fire departments and many other organizations. Maybe your kids will even spot some familiar faces in the line up.
Pricing: Free.
