Radiology Practice May Replace Demolished Israel Community Center

The Israel Community Center on Hempstead Turnpike, not in use since 2008, was knocked down yesterday.

After 60 years of service to Levittown's Jewish community, the Israel Community Center at 3235 Hempstead Turnpike closed its doors and merged with the Farmingdale Wantagh Jewish Center in 2008.

Levittown's only Jewish temple saw its membership dwindle from 400 families to just 15 people attending services and financial burdens became too high.

For the past two years, the building has sat across from Starbucks as an empty reminder of a once larger Jewish population.

After being used one last time for training by the Levittown Fire Department, the building was knocked down Monday, leaving yet another empty lot on Levittown's main drag.

No building permits have been filed and the lot is still advertised as available, but according to a source close to the situation there are plans to put  Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology in its place.

"It's a very nice facility and will be an improvement on what was there," said the source.

In business on Long Island for over 55 years, Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology currently has locations in Merrick, Massapequa, Plainview, Lindenhurst, Smithtown, West Islip, East Setauket and Medford.
