Crocus Lane Hearing Adjourned to Oct. 3

Not enough community members would be able to attend the hearing and others need more time to gather information, town says.

The Town of Hempstead confirmed Thursday that the Sept. 4 public hearing on the Crocus Lane Estates has been adjourned until Wednesday, Oct. 3.

"The town had been contacted by a number of representatives from community organizations who were unable to attend the Sept. 4 meeting, as well as others who felt that they needed more time to gather additional information and details from the developer on the development proposal," a letter stated.

The proposed 46-unit housing development for residents 55 and over would be located on an empty parcel of land located alongside the Long Island Motor Parkway in Levittown, which closed in 1938.

The zoning that is being sought from the town board would change the current single-family zoning (LRPD) to condominium/multi-family zoning (CA) for the Crocus Lane site, the town said.

At a Levittown Property Owner's Assocation (LPOA) attorney William Cohn, representing Crocus Lane Estates LLC, presented plans for the condos. According to the plans, the 46-unit estate will stand at 27.5 feet, offer one and two bedroom condominiums for less than $300,000.

The complex would also include 117 street parking spaces, but the developers need a variance as the zoning code requires 133 spaces, Cohn said at the meeting.

Residents and members of the LPOA have said that they would like the the property preserved, rather than built on, and some feel that the project will negatively affect the neighborhood, with traffic and overall quality of life issues among the main concerns.

A previous hearing in May was adjourned by the request Cohn. A spokesperson said that Cohn and developers wanted more time to discuss the proposal with neighbors.
