ELIJA to Host Autism Awareness Event Wednesday

The event is called "Champions of Awareness: An Autism Community Event" and will feature several keynote speakers.

The ELIJA School is in the midst of activities for its third annual Autism Awareness Week, which runs from April 1 through April 5.

The week coincides with Autism Awareness Day, which took place on Monday.

One of the activities allows people to “Experience and Understand Autism at The ELIJA School." Stretching from April 2 to April 5, the daily one-hour event will include a 20-minute overview of autism with ELIJA’s director and co-founder, Debora Harris-Thivierge, a 15-minute classroom and teaching observation and a 15-minute structured student interaction.

The student interactions will provide community participants a supervised one-on-one session with an ELIJA student.

In addition, ELIJA will be hosting an event on April 4 titled, “Champions of Awareness: An Autism Community Event." At the event, key autism speakers will provide participants with information on autism research, updateson ELIJA and family support issues.

Councilman Gary Hudes will provide opening remarks. Keynote speakers include ELIJA co-founder and director Debora Harris and new clinical director Justin DiScalfani.

The school also announced that a softball team from the Levittown Athletic Club dropped off a check for $1,800 at the school.

The team raised the money during their annual Rod Simons Summer Splash Tournament.
