Levittown Girls Chosen as State Finalists in National Miss Pageant

Pageant takes place on August 9 and 10; winner competes in national pageant at Disneyland.

Two Levittown girls are one step closer to representing New York State in the National American Miss Princess Pageant.

Shanel and Sayjel Tan have been selected to compete in the New York State pageant in the age 4-6 division. The girls went to an open call at the Marriot in Uniondale last month and went through an extensive interview process.

Based on the interview and the content of their application forms, the selection committee chose Shanel and Sayjel.

Both girls are active in the Levittown community through their sports involvement, such as playing soccer at the Levittown Soccer Club and gymnastics classes at All Stars Gymnastics.

Sayjel is a competitive swimmer and gymnast. She swims and has won medals at Levittown Swimming Association and she is on a pre-team for the All Stars Gymnastics team in Levittown. She also dances ballet at Nancy's Dance Factory.

Both girls attend a gifted school in Queens, where they read and do math above their grade level, according to their mother, Mojill Tan.

"As they get older, they want to work more on sharing their talents, to reach out and be of service to the community," said Tan.

The pageant will be held on August 9 and 10 at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, NY.

The winner of the pageant will receive $1,000, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland in California.

Each year, the National American Miss pageants awards thousands in scholarships and prizes to recognize and assist in the development of young women nationwide. The pageants are for "Today's Girl" and "Tomorrow's Leaders."
