Former Levittown Resident, Plainedge Custodian Burtis Birkhoff Dies at 83

Burtis Birkhoff, 83, formerly of Levittown, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at his home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, with Pastor Scott Carroll officiating. Interment will be private.

Mr. Birkhoff was born in Passaic, N.J., the son of the late Burtis Birkhoff and Sarah Schaff Birkhoff. He was a retired custodian of Plainedge School District # 18, Long Island, N.Y., with 25 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was the widower of Veronica Erdmann Birkhoff.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy Van Beveren and May Burn. He is survived by his son, Burt Birkhoff (Patricia) of West Islip, N.Y.; daughters, Alice Katt (Steven) of Spring Hill, Fla., and Veronica Erwin of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Pvt. Christopher Erwin (U.S. Army), Diana Katt, Thomas Birkhoff, Sarah Birkhoff and Marina Birkhoff; great-grandson, Max Ford; and his dear sister-in-law and best friend, Marion Moran of Rock Hill.

The family received friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, S.C.
