Island Trees Teacher Passes Away at 33

School district releases statement on Thursday following death of fourth grade teacher.

Island Trees fourth grade teacher Yu-Chuan Chen Leary, also known as "May May," has passed away at the age of 33.

Leary, an Oakdale resident, was awarded the teacher of the year award by Island Trees in 2012.

The Island Trees School District released a statement on Thursday:

"The entire school district is saddened by Mrs. Leary’s death. She was a wonderful and inspirational teacher to the hundreds of students who were fortunate to be taught by her.  Equally important, she was a great friend to her colleagues in our district. They are heartbroken...

In fact, the district’s loss cannot be described in words.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs. Leary and her family – she will be dearly missed by our staff, students and community."

Beloved wife of Jason, loving daughter of Richard and Sandra Wizar and Ruth Wang. Adored sister of Yu-Hsuan Chin, Gregg Wizar and Shannon Schappell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Reposing at Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Home, 245 Montauk Hwy. West Sayville, Thursday 2 p.m.to 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Religious service 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation private.
