Update: Man, 81, Struck and Killed by Drunk Driver in Levittown

A man faces charges after police say he drove drunk and struck an elderly man in Levittown early Tuesday morning, according to Nassau County Police.

Detectives said 81-year-old Robert Chapman exited a bus stop on Hempstead Turnpike and was walking toward Gardiners Avenue when he was struck by a car. The driver, James Taggart, 43, of Levittown, was drunk at the wheel when he struck Chapman as he crossed to the south side of the street, police stated.

Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Taggart's car, a 1991 Chevrolet Geo Prism, was impounded for safety inspections.

The investigation is ongoing, police reported.

The incident caused the shuttering of the westbound lanes as police and emergency crews secured the scene.
