Cops: Syosset Man Surrenders in Hit-and-Run that Killed Teen Girl

A Syosset man has been charged in the deadly hit-and-run that killed a special needs teenager in Levittown, according to Nassau County Police.

Michael Elardo, 48, of Syosset, surrendered to detectives Monday and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, cops said.

Elardo is the alleged driver in a hit-and-run that killed Bryanna Soplin early Sunday morning, police reported.

Bryanna, a 13-year-old from Levittown, was crossing Hempstead Turnpike at Gardiners Avenue when she was struck by a minivan at 12:02 a.m., cops said.

Bryanna reportedly had Down's Syndrome and was trying to visit her grandfather when she was hit by the car, reported Newsday.

Bryanna was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center with "head and body trauma" and was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. by hospital staff, police said. 

Bryanna's mother told CBS New York that her daughter had been tucked into bed Saturday night, but was discovered missing right about when she was hit by the minivan. 

Elardo will be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
