Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Portion of Wantagh Avenue

Traffic had to be diverted along Hempstead Turnpike; five cars and a bus were involved.

An six-vehicle accident sent several people to the hospital and caused traffic to be diverted at the intersection of N Wantagh Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike Monday afternoon.

According to Levittown Fire Department deputy chief Chris Behrens, the department received a call for the accident at 2:40 p.m.

Behrens said that five cars and a school bus were involved in the accident.

One of the cars involved overturned and the victim had to be extracted, according to Behrens.

Behrens said that several people involved in the accident were transported to an area hospital, but he could not estimate the severity of their injuries.

According to police, two people were treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.

Other victims were aided at the scene.

The cars involved in the accident were diverted to a Getty station at the southwest corner of the intersection.

Wantagh Avenue was closed southbound at Hempstead Turnpike to Balsam Lane.

Traffic traveling south along N Wantagh Avenue was diverted along Hempstead Turnpike and eventually returned to Wantagh Avenue through Balsam Lane.
