A Levittown man was arrested for assault Wednesday night after a struggle with a cab driver ended in one man being shot, according to Nassau Police.

Detectives reported that a 66-year-old man working as a cab driver for a Levittown-based company picked up Donald Canham, 41, of Levittown and was instructed to drive to a Hicksville residence.

While en route, Canham allegedly gave the victim inaccurate directions, asked how much money he had and then told him to pull into an empty lot on 17th Street, police stated.

The cab driver, a retired federal law enforcement officer, feared he was going to be robbed and pulled the cab to the curb. He identified himself and ordered Canham out of the cab.

The cab driver exited the cab and when he attempted to call 911 Canham charged him and struck him about the head multiple times with an unknown object, police reported.

The cab driver pulled out a licensed handgun and ordered Canham not to move. Canham allegedly charged again forcing the driver to fire his weapon striking the defendant in the leg.

Police arrived and the victim was removed to a local hospital where he was treated and released for a head injury.

Canham was also transported to a local hospital where he was admitted with a non life threatening gun shot wound. He was charged with Assault 2nd Degree and will be arraigned as soon as medically practical.
