Stolen UPS Packages Reported in Levittown

Editor's Note: The following was written by Patch user Ilia.

I just wanted to bring this to the attention of all Levittown residents, especially those residing in the Island Trees area.

I had packages stolen from my house today. The thieves took the items out of the boxes, and left the boxes on the street. A neighbor called me and told me that she found the empty boxes.

I drove to the area, found my boxes, as well as another box belonging to someone else. I would recommend to you having someone home for packages that have a high value, and or to request signature confirmation for your shipments.

I have reported the incident to the eighth precinct in Levittown.

Oh crap I'm waiting for something to come.
Donald Eccles December 06, 2013 at 04:17 PM
It doesn't matter. Even if someone is home they will still leave it at the door.
Johanna Keohane December 06, 2013 at 08:00 PM
Yeah I had them hold it now I will have to go to Uniondale to pick it up.
yeahitzme December 07, 2013 at 08:01 AM
time for home surveillance cameras in Levittown...lots of home robberies too...all thiefs have to do is follow one of those ups trucks and grab the boxes after drop off...sad!

I am working for UPS for the Holidays and will tell you first hand that we have at least 150 stops on our route, all of which require me to navigate long, slick, dark driveways and paths to get to your door. So, waiting for you to open the door and ask me to put the packages inside on the table is not an option. It takes 12 hours to do it now. Sorry. Keep your eyes out when you are expecting delivery. Please put your outside lights on!
Johanna Keohane December 08, 2013 at 07:51 AM
I don't know anyone in Levittown with a long driveway? Unfortunately some people can't wait for the packages because they work during normal business hours. Ups was cool they let put the packages in hold and now I will just go pick them up at the facility. The usps however told me they couldn't put it on hold because if everyone did that they wouldn't have enough staff for when people came in to pick it up.
Ilia December 09, 2013 at 07:14 AM
Well at the very least, maybe UPS drives can leave the package in a less visible spot like behind the bushes or something. My packages have been delivered right on the doorstep in plain sight.

There is no 8th precinct! Thanks Ed Mangano! You idiots voted for this!
Johanna Keohane December 22, 2013 at 12:13 PM
Ed, there was no 8th precinct before that either they hardly ever answered calls and when they did they couldn't do anything about it.
ed December 23, 2013 at 09:24 PM
Amazing they arrest and answer tens of thousands of calls every year. They cant do anything about civil matters.
Johanna Keohane December 26, 2013 at 06:42 PM
I'm not talking about a civil matter I'm talking about 1 grand worth of vandalism for one example. Unless of course vandalism is considered a criminal offense anymore?
ed December 26, 2013 at 09:16 PM
I'm curious what did you want them to do?
Johanna Keohane December 27, 2013 at 07:20 AM
Oh I don't know maybe investigate it? Try and find out who did it? Not just tell me that since no one has security cameras on their houses in the area they can't do anything. Because honestly if that is the answer then I don't see a need for them. If I just wanted to call and tell someone my car was vandalized I could have called a friend.
ed January 01, 2014 at 09:35 AM
Excactly! there is no need to call them if there is no solvalbility to a crime. If it makes you fell better to document it more power to you. But if you give them no description of the person who took it, vehicles info etc there is nothing they can do.
Johanna Keohane January 01, 2014 at 10:35 AM
Oh Ed. I told them I thought I knew who did and was prepared to give a name and address and they told me "Since there is no video cameras on the houses we can't do anything". So Ed if that is the case (as you admitted) then we don't need them. Save that money and spend it somewhere else in the county where it can be used.
ed January 01, 2014 at 06:17 PM
Johanna..."thinking" you know who did it is not enough to press charges. Criminal Justice 101. You have to have an eyewitness, video, or an admission. The cops in Levittown are busy enough deal with low lifes......you need them more than you think.
Johanna Keohane January 01, 2014 at 08:56 PM
Apparently not Ed. I don't need them if I have to be able to provide the proof. I always thought the police where supposed to gather the proof. Am I supposed to do all the investigating and proof gathering and then go to the police because I always thought the police gathered prof and then went to the DA? See we could just cut out the middle man if I need to give the proof why can't I go straight to the DA?
Johanna Keohane January 01, 2014 at 08:57 PM
And how are hey going to get an admission if they wouldn't even take the name? Better yet why ask me if I knew who did it?
ed January 03, 2014 at 08:19 AM
In many crimes there is nothing to go on......that's life. BTW you can go straight to the DA with crime complaints. Let the police deal with more serious calls in Levittown.
Johanna Keohane January 03, 2014 at 09:07 AM
Someone causing over 1000$ in damage is a felony and pretty serious. If I need to have video proof and finger prints and a confession for the police to even take interest then I don't need them. So I'm fine with closing the eighth precinct. I mean because in order to get any proof that the person did it (again what I thought the police were for) I would have to HIRE a private investigator. So I would rather save my money and cut the budget so I can pay for the private investigator I would need anyway. This was just the worst example I have every time I called the eighth precinct the answer was also either "what do you expect me to do" and "I can't do anything anyway" if that is the case then I see no difference now. Because Ed. If my house had been broken into or I had been killed there still would be no proof and nothing to go on so would they be able to do nothing for that too? And before you say I am making a big leap from vandalism to murder let me remind you the damage to my cars was enough to make it a felony not just a misdemeanor that was ignored. So if the answer is I also need to be dead/injured before they take interest then I don't need them I just need to move.
Johanna Keohane January 03, 2014 at 09:18 AM
Also before you think I am anti-cop I have family members who are cops in the city. Where they actually investigate crimes. Because last I checked Levittown's serious crime is DUI, domestic disturbances, and pot. Unless you want to say something different? Break ins and murders (what I would call more serious crimes) are not the norm in Levittown. I mean even most of the car "break-ins" I see posted in here are unlocked cars. Because that happened to me too. My car was opened (it doesn't have to be broken in to if it is unlocked) and some change was stolen and an old satellite radioAnd you maybe surprised to hear this but the answer from the eighth precinct was they can't do anything about it. So what more serious crimes are you referring to because they don't seem to be serious enough to make the news?
ed January 05, 2014 at 09:15 PM
I get it..Let me guess...now you're going to tell me the city cops do a better job blah blah blah. You have issues.
Johanna Keohane January 06, 2014 at 06:01 PM
I have issues? I find that in a debate when one party turns to insults it means they don't have any better answer. You call people idiots all the time for voting for Mangano. But even here you said the police can't do anything unless there is video evidence or an admission. When a felony was committed the officer asked me if I knew who did it. I said I thought I did and could give name and address. But the cop told me that didn't matter because no one has cameras on their houses. I see no need for a police force who can't/won't investigate a felony. So combing precincts makes sense. Now you insult city cops. Well the city cops I know investigate crimes. They try and find out who did it. So yes I guess since they at least will try they by default do a better job then the eighth precinct ever did for me in the 20+ years I have lived in Levittown.
Johanna Keohane January 06, 2014 at 06:14 PM
I haven't seen anything in the news or the patch that make me think crime is getting exponentially worse. I see a continued trend that has been building over the last ten years at least.
ed January 07, 2014 at 08:55 PM
Johanna you know nothing about criminal investigations. City cops use the same methods as LI cops. They refer felony crimes to Detectives to investigate. If you have no serious proof, admissions, or eyewitness/video there is noting to go on then the report is closed...end of story.
Johanna Keohane January 07, 2014 at 10:24 PM
Ed, so it is acceptable for the police to ignore a felony because I don't have proof of who committed it? Collecting proof and investigating is what police are supposed to do? You say an admission would be needed but they couldn't even take the time to speak with the person I thought did it. Which was the answer and result each time I needed (strike that 'thought I needed') them. I see absolutely no difference with or without the eighth precinct. And you refer to criminal investigations? But it seems investigations is the wrong word since the proof/admission is needed to even start an investigation. My sisters car in TN was broken in too. The police didn't need proof from her or an admission. They investigated and they caught the person. The eighth precinct would have just told me that since I didn't have a security camera they couldn't do anything.
ed January 11, 2014 at 04:24 PM
They don't ignore it if you filed a report. It is documented and used to track crime in the area....
Johanna Keohane January 11, 2014 at 08:10 PM
Well that does a lot of good. They ignored it because they wouldn't even bother to talk to the person I thought did it.
