Levittown firefighters used Heavy Rescue 624 to pull the car away from a snow bank and firefighters pushed the car back onto its four tires.

Hempstead Tpke. eastbound was closed during the operation.

Why is the frequency of car accidents in Levittown surprising us any more?? Hempstead Turnpike cuts right through our little town. And for reasons that I still can't figure out, the goal of most drivers on the turnpike is to go no less than 65 MPH, NEVER use turn signals, and keep no less than two inches distance between bumpers. It's also customary to, without warning, weave from the left lane through the middle lane and into the right lane and then BACK AGAIN. What's in play here??!! Bad drivers or the "Hempstead Turnpike Curse?"

Bad drivers. The turnpike is not cursed - - except if you count those bad drivers as being the curse. And inattentive pedestrians.

Yes, Lynne. Realistically, the turnpike is not cursed. But there's one thing I can't get away from: I grew up near Elmont/Franklin Square. Very westward of here. The one road that EVERYONE hated was Hempstead Turnpike! There were always accidents and crazy drivers. And that was about thirty years ago and 13 miles west of here. Can't help but be a little superstitious. The "Turnpike Curse?"

Or, Lynne, there have always been and will always be "bad drivers."

One thing I remember from my drivers ed course at Floral Park Memorial was my teacher stressing that "The pedestrian ALWAYS has the right of way." Crazy or not.
