Woman Injured in Hempstead Turnpike Hit-and-Run

The driver struck the woman and fled the scene Monday night, police said.

A 28-year-old woman was injured after being struck by a car on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown Monday night, police said.

The woman was walking in front of the Tri-County Flea Market when she was hit by a dark sedan at 10:30 p.m. which fled the scene, according to police.

The woman complained of back, neck and body pain, and an ambulance from the Levittown Fire Department took her to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, police said. Her injuries are non-life threatening.

A recent report rated Hempstead Turnpike as the most dangerous road in the region. A total of 15 pedestrians were killed along Hempstead Turnpike between the years of 2008 and 2010, the report said.

Additionally, a Levittown teen was killed crossing Hempstead Turnpike near Division Avenue in April.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.

If you dont cross at the correct lights and walk in front of a car , you get hit. This is a no brainer. Someone has to brake the law for a person to get hit by a car.

I completely agree. The media always reports Hempstead Tpke. as one of the most dangerous roads. I can't tell you how many times a day I see people crossing the street against the light or jaywalking totally oblivious.

All the roadside memorials to the victims seem to be no where near an intersection - always somewhere in between. No one has a chance to survive if the car that strikes them is at full speed - so even if the accident happens at an intersection the pedestrian has a better chance of survival, since the traffic there is less likely to be moving at full speed, there is a bit of control. Sad to see so much heart ache.

Theyre putting cameras up pretty much everywhere on Hempstead turnpike right now and they don't just take pictures. A friend shared a video to me that was crystal clear, and it was people running red lights and getting into car accidents. It also says what intersection and the date. Try googling "Nassau County red light car accidents". I know the tittle had Nassau in it and also it was of 2011
