FEMA Deadline Approaches, TV Show Films in Nassau

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

Nassau County officials are reminding residents who are still reeling from the impact of Hurricane Sandy that the Jan. 28 filing deadline for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) applications is just around the corner.

Applications can be completed online at fema@service.govdelivery.com or in person at one of the 18 Disaster Recovery Centers throughout the New York region that will remain open until further notice. These one-stop shops provide face-to-face assistance for homeowners, renters, business owners and eligible survivors as expeditiously as possible. Translation services are available for those who do not speak English.

To qualify for assistance, individual or household losses must have occurred in an area covered by the Presidential Disaster Declaration for New York, which includes Nassau in addition to 12 other counties. They must register with FEMA at fema@service.govdelivery.com. If you experience problems registering, please email support@govdelivery.com for assistance.

In addition, the deadline for Hurricane Sandy survivors to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is Feb. 4. Workers can register for DUA by calling: 1-888-209-8124; out of state residents: 1-877-358-5306; or visit http://www.labor.ny.gov/ui/2012-sandy-services.shtm.

All of these services are provided by FEMA at no charge.

FEMA Extends Sandy Hotel Program

Displaced Hurricane Sandy victims who receive federal funds for temporary hotel will not have to check out this weekend.

The Transitional Sheltering Program (TSP), known as the Federal Emergency Management Agency-paid temporary hotel program, was extended by 14 days, with the new checkout date scheduled for Feb. 10, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday.

Sandy Update from the Red Cross

As of Jan. 22, the American Red Cross has provided the following services on Long Island:
  • Served 1,215,443 meals and snacks to residents
  • Distributed 2,516,876 bulk cleaning supplies, clean-up kits, comfort kits, toiletries and additional materials
  • Contacted 31,729 people through in-person outreach to assess their needs including counseling and referrals to organizations and agencies including FEMA
'The Americans' Filming in East Meadow

The brand new FX television series "The Americans," featuring Keri Russell, filmed at two location in Nassau County on Monday.

Corporate Drive behind the Source Mall in Westbury was closed from 7 to 11 a.m. and at around 5 p.m., the film crew was in Eisenhower Park. Film crews put a fake tree in along Park Boulevard. The scene called for a car to crash into a tree.

Mangano Calls on Public to Nominate Women of Distinction for Women’s History Month Celebration

In recognition of Women’s History Month in March, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano is calling on members of the community to nominate local women who have made extraordinary contributions. Nominations should be submitted no later than Feb. 15.

Nominees will be sought in the categories of Community Service; Drug Abuse/Prevention; Protecting the Most Vulnerable; and Broke Gender Barriers. Nominations will also be accepted for women who performed extraordinary acts to further Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

What about the ASPESTOS tiles that are falling into our sand from boardwalk demo. Check it out go to the beach and on top of cement pilings are broken ASPESTOS tiles that were once used as spacers. They are falling into the sand and will be spread and crushed even further into lb sand
