State to Hold Meeting on Grumman Cancer Concerns

Public discussion set for Feb. 13 at Bethpage High School.

Story by Joe Dowd.

The New York State Department of Health will hold a public meeting next week to discuss its recently released evaluation of cancer occurrence and environmental exposures in the area of the Grumman sites in Bethpage.

The meeting, which is open to the public, is set for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The meeting is to address ongoing concerns related to Grumman's toxic legacy, the former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in Bethpage.

Last summer, local residents gathered at the Seaford Fire Department headquarters for a meeting airing concerns about the cleanup of toxic groundwater flowing southward from the Grumman site.

A report has been prepared by the Division of Environmental Remediation within the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Readers can also download the program here.

The state also has produced a cancer map for Nassau County. It can be viewed here.
