Town Announces Tax Options

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

With the deadline for paying the second half 2012 general tax approaching, Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin is reminding taxpayers of their options. Payments for the second half 2012 general taxes received or postmarked by the Aug. 10 deadline will be penalty-free.

The E-Z Pay Drive Thru payment windows are located behind the main tax office at 200 North Franklin St. in Hempstead (follow the signs on the corner of North Franklin and Bedell Streets). Open business days Aug. 1-10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the drive-through windows accept check and money order payments only.

During peak collection times, hours of operation at the main tax office will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Aug. 1-3, 6-10).

Satellite offices at Rock Hall Museum (199 Broadway, Lawrence) and Levittown Hall (201 Levittown Parkway, Hicksville) will be open to receive checks and money orders for tax payments from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 6-10.

Residents who would like to pay via credit card or e-check may log onto the town's website at www.TOH.LI and follow the "Receiver of Taxes" link to "Online Tax Payments," or call Official Payments Corporation at 1-877-306-6056. A 2.5 percent convenience fee for credit card transactions will be incurred, while a flat fee of $2 will be charged for electronic check payments. Hempstead Town receives no portion of these fees, which are charged by the company that processes the transactions.

The Mobile Tax Office is scheduled to visit the following locations from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 1: Merrick Senior Center, 2550 Clubhouse Road, Merrick
  • Thursday, Aug. 2: Town Parking Lot O-3, Davison Ave., Oceanside
  • Friday, Aug. 3: Elmont Memorial Library, 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont
  • Monday, Aug. 6: Franklin Square Senior Center, 1182 Martha Place, Franklin Square

Taxpayers should bring their entire tax bill when making payments in person. Tax stubs should not be detached from the bill. For further information please visit the town's website or call the Office of Receiver of Taxes at (516) 538-1500.

there so good at takeing our money.but spending it is always a lost for us.
Robert Demarco July 22, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Why not just mail it in? They spend all of this unnecessary money to get articles like this run, to get their names out there. Mail. It works. But if you use the drive thru window you get a neat pen with Clavin's name on it, paid for with those tax dollars.

betcha my neighbor who sits in a foreclosed home renting out rooms for 5 YEARS will go and buy his second new car on tax day! better yet maybe another 10 day cruise! perhaps another jet ski to add to the collection of 5 year old water crafts! must be WONDERFUL to have no house payment and not pay any taxes, walk on debt while boasting and have no fear or worries about getting removed from his home! FIVE years!! nice job town! thanks for handing me his part of the bill to foot.
Robert Demarco July 22, 2012 at 12:54 pm
Perhaps your neighbor has connections in the Town. That is how everything operates in TOH. For the fourth Sunday in a row, I am watching TOH employees work in the park across the street from my house, presumably at premium pay. Why can't they do this during the week at straight pay?
Longbeacher July 22, 2012 at 02:05 pm
i actually saw 8 people putting up a sign on Lido BLVD last week ,i'm a republican but these guys must go
Kevin July 22, 2012 at 02:17 pm
Robert and Jane, first let me say I do think that Mr. Clavin is a good man and works hard. It may be too late. Our county has so many people brain washed into thinking it is always someone elses fault. It seems they have control of everything from Civic and Homeowners Associations to Building Departments to Board of Zoning to Fire Departments to School Boards to church members to Little Leagues and even some media outlets. My two wishes are that good people start to think and not just take the word of their organizations and that the powers to be, soul search, and start governing for all the people. Especially our children. Robert and Jane the issues people talk about amonst themselves are real.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 02:59 pm
You are complaining about the price of the pens they give out?
Bet you're a Democrat.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 02:59 pm
No premium pay on Sunday. Why not put in a resume if you are envious of people cleaning a park, Robert?
Leonard Bauman July 22, 2012 at 03:22 pm
What is this neighbors address so we can go walk our poopy dogs
Jane July 22, 2012 at 04:16 pm
No doubt Mr.Clavin is a good hard working man as his record speaks for itself. Certainly not my neighbors fault he got laid off 5 years ago and couldnt keep up his obligations to the bank or the tax man. Kids call him... the free house man, as he calls himself! excellent example for my kids Kevin to know that when ya screw up or things go bad and one can no longer honor there obligations there aint no one to blame but yourself. and the punishment to yourself is .....nothing. bank punishment...nothing. town tax punishment....nothing. go ahead live there anyways!life goes on as normal except ya got a wad of cash to spend since ya cant afford a mortage or taxes. and that Kevin is a real life issue. Robert ya hit the nail on the head. Friends of important friends in The Town.
rocco beldelli July 22, 2012 at 04:30 pm
why dont you guys grow-up theres always a controversial agument
Robert Demarco July 22, 2012 at 04:48 pm
Hey Eddie, I am an independent. If more voters were independents and did not vote along straight party lines, we would not have the same hacks in office. If you keep voting for the same sheep, do not complain about the state of the County.
Robert Demarco July 22, 2012 at 04:50 pm
I am not envious; I dislike my tax dollars being misused. You apparently do not care about how your money is spent. Perhaps you are a beneficiary of the system.
Jane July 22, 2012 at 05:00 pm
what grown up subject would you like to talk about rocco?
Prince Phillip July 22, 2012 at 05:04 pm
I know Don Clavin and hes an honorable and trustworthy person...BTW I am a Democrat and support him. The system is totally broken and all I hear is complaints about the people that play the system. If it bothers you all so much get off the damn computer and go out and change the system. Complaining in an online blog isnt going to affect changes to the system.
Eddie you obviously have issues with yourself! Your assessment of Robert being a Democrat because hes complaining about pens makes absolutely NO SENSE!
Robert Demarco July 22, 2012 at 05:22 pm
The problem with the TOH officials and Nassau Cpunty officials is that they take their orders from the Party leaders. All issues divide along party lines (this goes for both parties). None of them vote their conscience, or along the withes of their constituents. A perfect example of this was Belesi. He is a former Nassau County police officer. It was obvious that he had a dilemma over the vote to close police precincts. It was also obvious that he reluctantly voted with the party rather than the way he thought was right. Every vote is 10-9. This is good government? We are off-topic here, but the issue has been raised.
Vincen Franco July 22, 2012 at 05:39 pm
I have a great idea why doesn't the TOH allow us to split the bill. For example the half of payment is due as stipulated and the remainder can be paid by the 10th of the month when it is actually due. It's all computerized anyway so why not give the taxpayer an option. Wouldn't that be grand of our local governemt. Instead of the usual diatribe of when the money is due to the Don. It would relieve some of the burden of our high taxes we pay here for reduced services etc.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 06:19 pm
As far as I know, taxes must always be paid. If not they become a lien against the property. The Town always gets its taxes. If I'm wrong, tell me how.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 06:20 pm
The only way to avoid property taxes is to become a church. Otherwise, the property is liened for taxes, which means if you aren't paying them eventually another owner will, along with interest and fees.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 06:35 pm
The bill is split in half-years. You can pay the full bill or pay in two half payments. Each payment can be 30 days late without a penalty.
If your taxes are escrowed by your mortgagee, the bank has the option of paying in one or two payments. Most banks then choose one payment because it increases the "cushion" of your funds that the government permits them to hold in their escrow account.
Eddie July 22, 2012 at 06:37 pm
Yes, Robert, I agree that is the biggest problem. And it's the least-known problem -- Information kept from the voters while they squabble among themselves.
ed July 23, 2012 at 01:07 am
If someone does not pay their property taxes and they have a mortgage (which they may not be paying either) The bank will pay the property taxes so as not to lose the property to the state or county because of overdue taxes. The banks take the loss and pass it on to the rest of us, or the bank gets bail out money from the gov't who gets the money in the form of taxes from ... us.

"Nothing is certain in life, like death and taxes", by Ben Frankin. So grin and bear it!
CP July 23, 2012 at 01:42 pm
We can hardly pay our taxes and our mortgages, but the private sector is doing fine. Another 4 years of this and we can all stop paying our mortgages and taxes, receive section 8 housing, park a brand new BMW in our driveway and purchase a brand new iphone. Only people surviving in this country are the people that work for the man or live off of him! Sad!
Rich L July 23, 2012 at 03:19 pm
instead of complaining report the guy illegally renting rooms instead of complaining write your representative instead of complaining go to town meeting instead of complaining VOTE
Bill Farran July 24, 2012 at 02:18 am
Bill
I'm a little confused. I live in CO-OP, and do not pay taxes directly. When I go to the Merrick Golf Course, which is a Town of Hempstead course, I am told that Long Beach is not in the Town of Hempstead and I have to pay non residence rates. Now the Patch has an article that says Long Beach homeowners have to pay a taxes to the Town of Hempstead. Is Long Beach a part of the ATown of Hempstead or not?
