Town Postpones Cat Colony Relocation, Animal Shelter Tours

A weekly look-in at news from around the Town of Hempstead.

TOH Places Relocation of Bellmore Cat Colony on Hold

Earlier this week, the Town of Hempstead placed the relocation of the Newbridge Road Park cat colony in Bellmore, originally scheduled for Tuesday, on hold. The town will work with the Humane Society to assess the colony at the park and to explore options concerning the habitat where the cats have settled.

No action will be taken until the Humane Society looks at the situation, consults the town and offers its recommendations.

Town Receives US EPA Award

At an April 27 ceremony, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented its 2012 Environmental Quality Award to Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray. The award was called "the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA" in a letter announcing Hempstead Town’s selection. The town was recognized at the EPA's Manhattan offices for Hempstead's creation of Long Island’s one-of-a-kind renewable energy park.

The town's Renewable Energy Park in Point Lookout is home to a host of innovative green energy projects, many of which have been funded with federal and state grants, as well as LIPA energy credits. Some of the features at the park include a 100-kilowatt wind turbine, a 60-kilowatt solar field, a series of geothermal wells (provide heating and cooling to town offices), as well as Long Island's only hydrogen fueling station, which powers up pollution free fuel cell automobiles.

In the Environmental Quality Award announcement, EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck stated of the awardees, "Each year, EPA searches for those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality and public health."

Town Hosting Animal Shelter Tours

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter will host two free educational tours on Saturday, May 19.

The tours will be given at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. In keeping with the theme of "Be Kind to Animals Week," shelter staff will give lectures on how to take care of animals and what can be done to help homeless animals. Staffers will discuss how the animals come to the shelter, the adoption process, proper pet care and the Pet Foster Program. Tours of the kennels will also be given.

All visitors who bring treats and/or toys for the shelter animals will be eligible for a door prize. There will also be raffles and baked goods for sale. Proceeds benefit the "Tails of Hope Fund," an organization helping to fund extraordinary medical surgeries for dogs and cats.

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter is located at 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh. For more information, call the Shelter at (516) 785-5220 or visit www.toh.li/animal-shelter.

I'm so happy they are leaving those cats alone. They made a good decision and thank you to all those who protested last weekend, good job!

I'm glad my kids go to Seaman's Neck Park. and not some cat infested park that stinks of cat urine. I would have to think, that it wouldn't be so healthy for my kids to play there.
terry May 6, 2012 at 07:56 pm
But Laurie Lat and her friends don't care about your kids, kittens first, taxpayers and their children second.

Justice delayed is justice denied.
Our tax dollars were just going to relocate the cats to another side of the park. Now we need to waste a town attorneys time with the feral cat issue. We need to move them and ensure they are all spayed and neutered, including the cats, Joyce Christie, Jennifer Jones, their lawyer Liz Stein and Kate Murray.... Anyone else....

I guess the EPA didn't see all the salt trucks roaming around the Town of Hempstead this winter and every winter (even when there was no snow or ice on the ground) looking for branches to pick up. I guess they didn't see the 5 TON dump trucks roaming around the rest of the year, also looking for debris to pick up. I've told Kate Murray about this wasteful use of fuel, many times at Town Hall meetings, yet she still supports it.
I guess the EPA doesn't see all the Murraygrams (Kate Murray's mailers) that she uses to make sure she remains popular. Over 1000 trees need to be logged each year to support Kate Murray's mailing habit. She sends out about 25 mailers costing taxpayers over $5 million dollars per year.

That RVC guy May 7, 2012 at 03:08 am
So if a bunch of crazy people feed cats in a park...the cats become known as a "Colony"?
And I imagine "Colony" confers some sort of protective aura because its not "A bunch of horny cats eating themselves silly and crapping all over the place". Much like the "Colony" of geese crapping the life out of RVC fields because no one has the courage to label them "pests" and take appropriate culling activity. Jeebus.
Cat May 7, 2012 at 10:56 am
You would kill an animals because it craps in a field? Seriously? I hope you don't take that attitude with you to church on Sunday.
Mary Smithstein May 7, 2012 at 11:08 am
What does anything you menetioned have to do with the article?
ender wiggins May 7, 2012 at 12:51 pm
It's too bad people like Mary and Terry can't make the connection between the environmental protection agency giving out awards that mean nothing, to a town that wastes resources and destroys the environment to pick up some sticks and keep Kate Murray in everyone's thoughts.
Steven Wagner May 7, 2012 at 12:56 pm
Its amazing.Just got a great idea.Instead of complaining to the town about a neighbors illegally installed wood stove gagging the block,I should say the cats are developing lung cancer.
Mary Smithstein May 7, 2012 at 01:11 pm
Wow really so you can read my mind? Thats a real talent you have. I asked a valid question Mr. Procacci was saying things that had nothing to do with this article. Please do not speak for me you do not know me.
paul May 7, 2012 at 02:01 pm
To Felix Procacci:
With the topic you mentioned about salt trucks for ice and snow removal... They did the correct thing. Do you just think poof and a salt truck pops out of nowhere in a split second. You would be the first to complain if you had driven on patch of ice somewhere, For the above winter services you need to be proactive not reactive. Now please get a reality check, you seem to be missing one...

I applaud the Town of Hempstead for involving the Humane Society to access the suituation rationally before any action to relocate the cats is taken.
I.D. May 8, 2012 at 02:23 am
i think if you lived next door to one of these nut jobs that spend all their time and money on caring for feral animals you would not be applauding anybody. of course the feeding stations are never enough, they bring it home to my backyard. good luck gardening with the added bonus of cat poop. i say these stations are harmful to all those involved.
Bebe May 8, 2012 at 03:56 am
I totally agree with you MAC. Toxoplasmosis is a disease you can get from cat feces. Dangerous to adults and kids. They make a big deal about pregnant women staying away from the litter box. However, Newbridge Rd Park is turning into 1 big litter box. God only knows what kind of other diseases these WILD cats are carrying!
Andrea May 15, 2012 at 08:18 am
I agree with you 100%. First in response to someone a little earlier, cat's clean up after they relieve themselves. They cover it up. Must be birds near the pool. Those cats deserve to be treated with respect and cared for. What about kindness and compassion for living things. I own a cat, a 4 year old. I actually adopted him. True he is an indoor cat and now one of my new additions to a human family, but feral cats deserve care, attention, love, food and shelter. God Bless those kind people who are looking after them and protecting their envireonment. For those that are angry, be kind.
I.D. May 15, 2012 at 03:09 pm
cat poop is cat poop. it stinks, it makes a mess, and causes disease. and of course, during their breeding time it sounds llike a nursery of screaming babies all night, then they fight over who is where. i say take these animals home to your yard, fence or cage them in and then i do not have to deal with the poop.
Linda May 15, 2012 at 03:51 pm
What about the feral cat colony living at the Merrick Train Station parking lot? I am tired of the empty cans of food sitting there until the cat people pick them up!
I.D. May 15, 2012 at 06:08 pm
or not!!!
Laura June 5, 2012 at 02:45 am
OMG, are you kidding. They should open a shooting season on the "Canadian Geese". The county could charge for the license and they hunters can bring the meat to all the food kitchens for people to eat. Those birds discust me and I am a full fledged Auborn supporter supporter. They are all over Long Island and Eisenhower park actually has dogs only for the gulf courses. They pay big bugs and they do nt have to deal with these damn birds. Wasn't Nything learned when Captain Sully had a goose sucked into his engine. Nassau picks the stupest things to bring up to albany. As for the cats I do not understand how a group of people that it sounds liked caused the colony to thrive should be forced to pay the county taxes and any other money. Enough is enough. I have a neighbor whom left the cat behind when the bank forcoculsed. He now lives like a king.
