At Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown School District, Valentine’s Day was an opportunity for fifth-grade students in Siobhan Schneider’s class to celebrate cherished individuals in their lives during the classroom’s annual VIP Day.

During this heartwarming event, the students escorted their VIPs through the decorated cafeteria and down a red carpet to his or her seat. One by one, the students, standing at a podium next to their guest, read a biography about their VIP and presented each with a pink rose.

Ms. Schneider explained that her fifth-graders had written their essays over the course of six to seven weeks. After the students interviewed their VIPs, they were instructed to write a five-paragraph biography that included a discussion of what their special person means to them.

After the essays were read, the students and their VIPs gathered for refreshments.
