Division Avenue Notebook: Science Olympiads at States, Poetry Contest

News and notes from Division Avenue High School.

The following is a collection of press releases about Division Avenue High School provided to Patch by Syntax.

Science Olympiads at States

For the fourth consecutive year, Levittown Division Avenue High School science students placed in the top ten percent of all New York State Science Olympiad teams.

The students attended the state-level Science Olympiad competition at Canisius College in Buffalo and participated in 25 science events throughout the two-day event.

The student-scientists have been preparing for the competition since October, under the direction of advisors Gerard Marzigliano and Lynn Castellano, and earned an invitation to the state-level competition through their performance at the Long Island Western Regional Competition.

Particular praise goes to Sara Gonzales and Ashley Stinnett for taking home a fourth-place medal in thermodynamics.

The rest of the team: Ellen Chaleff, Savvas Papadopoulas, Navjot Singh, Felicia Comuniello, Casey Pinner, Ashley Stinnett, Amiel Quadri, Ayesha Syed, Lenore Comuniello, Christina Reilly, Joseph Winkler, Sara Gonzalez, James Reilly, Danielle Kramer, Sukhnet Sahota, Eric Maciel and Michael Severance.

Division Student's French Poem Honored

Division junior Katherine Darr has been selected as a winner in the Nassau region of this year’s Original Poetry Contest, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.

Katherine’s poem, “Rever est une chose merveilleuse,” was submitted to the advanced level of the competition, which includes students in any post-Regents course.

The original poem, written entirely in French, was presented at the regional finals on April 2 and was awarded honorable mention.

Her poem was one of only five selected in all of Nassau County to be considered for a prize.
