Island Trees Students Participate in National Spelling Bee

Seventh-grader David Wendt named winner, moves on to Long Island regional competition at Hofstra Unversity.

During the months of December and January, students at Memorial Middle School participated in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee. 

All students competed in the first round of the competition in their English Language Arts classes and the winners from each class qualified for the final round which took place on Wednesday, Jan. 8, said ITMMS Principal, Dr. Roger Bloom.  

"At the conclusion of the last round, David Wendt, a seventh grader, was named the winner of the school competition by correctly spelling the final word monochrome," Bloom said.

David moves on to the Long Island regional competition at Hofstra University. The winner of the Long Island regional competition will qualify for the spelling bee finals in Washington D.C., with the event to air on ESPN.

"Congratulations to David for winning the MMS Scripps Spelling Bee and best of luck in the regional competition," Bloom said.
