All 364 MacArthur students received their diplomas on Saturday afternoon inside the David S. Mack Sports Complex at Hofstra University.
MacArthur Principal Kathleen Valentino welcomed over 1,200 friends, family and faculty to the school's 50th graduation commencement ceremony with a poignant speech that evoked a thunderous applause.
"Once a General, always a General," Valentino said. "Once one has achieved the exhalted rank of General, nothing can take that away from him or her. The qualities necessary-the pride, the regal bearing, the guts. They all become intertwined with the person so he or she never leaves the role. At MacArthur, we fondly refer to our student-athletes as the Generals or the Lady Generals."
Several other keynote speakers, including Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Salutatorian Jesse Frye, Valedictorian Adam Brulhardt, Senator Chuck Schumer and Class President Evan Gardner, addressed the crowd.
Senator Schumer urged parents in the audience to take advantage of the $2,500 tax credit provision he sponsored to help middle-class families manage the costs of college tuition. A married couple filing taxes jointly can have up to $160,000 in adjusted gross income and still qualify for a tax credit of $2,500 for each child heading to college.
When Class President Evan Gardner took the podium, he praised the arts and athletics programs at MacArthur.
"We have learned cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship on our various sports fields," Gardner said. "We have learned to push ourselves both theatrically and artistically. All this hard work has resulted in an extremely gifted and special class of seniors."
