MacArthur Football Player Wins Top Linebacker Award

After being named second team All-Long Island in December, and leading the team in tackles for the second straight season, MacArthur linebacker Joe Tangredi was named the Piner Award winner on Sunday as the county's top linebacker, Newsday reported.

Tangredi continues MacArthur's tradition of outstanding linebackers. In 2010, linebacker Tom Joyce won the Thorp Award, given to Nassau County's best overall player, and in 2002 Gian Villante also won the Piner Award.

Tangredi wasn't the only great linebacker on MacArthur this season - teammate Anthony DeNunzio was named second team all-state in December, along with senior running back Tom Kelleher, who was named to the fourth team.

The Generals went 7-1 during the regular season, including a 24-17 upset win over Garden City before the playoffs. After an opening-round win against Elmont, MacArthur fell in overtime to Wantagh in the semifinals.
