Basketball Fundraiser Being Held to Support Resident With Brain Tumor

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament fundraiser is being held from June 22-24 to help Bobby Nagelberg and his family, as they deal with his surgery and treatment for a brain tumor.

Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes is encouraging residents to support a Levittown native and his family by participating in and/or attending a 3-on-3 basketball tournament being held from June 22-24.

The tournament will financially benefit Bobby Nagelberg as his family deals with the extraordinary costs associated with his surgery and treatment for a brain tumor.

Nagelberg grew up playing basketball at St. Bernard’s Parish, playing through his senior year in high school. In fact, his travel team won three diocesan championships. Seven players on that team, including Bobby, played together from fourth grade through their high school graduation.

In Bobby’s last semester at Suffolk Community College this past January, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Following surgery in February and ongoing radiation, Bobby has maintained a positive outlook.

“My children played CYO basketball for many yeas at St. Bernard’s,” Hudes said. “I remember how caring and giving the volunteers were at that time. Although many years have passed since my children played CYO Basketball, this obviously has not changed. I encourage any members of the community who have had children play CYO basketball over the years to become involved with this fundraiser and support a neighbor.”

The fundraiser, hosted by St. Bernard’s Basketball, is a three-day 3-on-3 tournament. There is a $100 entry fee for each team of up to four players (one alternate). The registration deadline is June 18. For more information or to obtain registration forms, please contact Bob Thomas at 516-382-0382.

The organizers of the tournament also encourage local residents to come down and support their Bobby Nagelberg fundraising efforts at the Alumni games featuring players from MacArthur, Division and Island Trees High Schools. Those games will be taking place on June 14 and 15 at 6 p.m. in the St. Bernard’s Gym.

“Our community has a history of coming out to support their neighbors and I know that this will be the case for Bobby Nagelberg as well,” Hudes said.
