The Chinese food restaurant was badly damaged in a fire on Sunday; Salon April Marie to hold collection on Thursday.

As the owners of Fu Mei Kitchen in Levittown pick up the pieces after a fire badly damaged their restaurant early Sunday, a neighbor is asking for the community's support.

April Brooks of Salon April Marie, located at 50 Division Ave. next door, will be collecting donations starting Thursday to help and assist the owners of Fu Mei Kitchen.

Although other neighboring stores were also damaged in the fire, the most severe damage was done to Fu Mei Kitchen. The fire started at the plexi-glass front window and burned upward into the restaurant. No injuries were reported, and an investigation is ongoing.

Brooks will have a donation box and a large support card for people to sign at the reception desk of Salon April Marie starting Thursday.

"I really felt horrible, they work hard," Brooks said. "That’s their life – they are there every day. I can’t even imagine how they felt. I’ve only had my business six months – if that would have happened to me I don’t know what I would have done."

Fu Mei Kitchen has been in Levittown for at least 30 years, according to Brooks. Patch users speculated in the comments of the original story that the fire might have been started by Levittown youth.

Brooks said the community can really make a difference by showing support to the restaurant.

"I know times are hard, but any little bit counts," she said. "Even if they buy new pots and pans, you know, something, just to show them that we’re thinking of them."
