Kiwanis Notebook: Bird Sanctuary Clean-Up, Laser Tag

Kiwanis One Day Clean Up of Bird Sanctuary

The Adelphi University Circle K hosted a Kiwanis One Day Cleanup of the East Meadow Bird Sanctuary.

The bird sanctuary, originally a water discharge basin, is plagued by a continual influx of trash that flows down the drains of local streets and illegal dumping.  The East Meadow Bird Sanctuary is Nassau County-owned land adopted by Council of East Meadow Community Organizations (CEMCO) and perpetually designated as a preserve.

K-Family members in attendance included Adelphi Circle Kers, East Meadow Kiwanians, Levittown Kiwanians, Levittown Key Clubbers and Bowling Green K-Kids.

The K-Family members removed over 40 large trash bags, plus rolls of chain link fencing, auto parts, plastic tubing and other scrap metal.

Following the clean up, the group also planted three trees.

Circle K DPG Rickie Santer, who coordinated the clean-up with assistance from County Legislator and Kiwanian Norma Gonsalves’ office, was pleased by the teamwork demonstrated by the K-Family members. 

“I think this was a great Kiwanis One Day event," he said, "We had four K-Family branches working side by side enjoying each other’s companionship.  Age didn’t matter, only our shared dedication to making our community a better place.”

LISC K-Family Laser Tag Fundraiser

Over 100 LISC K-Family members enjoyed a night of fun and games to benefit Kiwanis charities such as the ELIMINATE Project, Kamp Kiwanis and KPTC. 

Kiwanians, Circle Kers, Key Clubbers, Builders Clubbers and K-Kids challenged each other in video games and played against their age groups in laser tag.

When not in the laser tag area or playing video games, the K-Family members enjoyed pleasant conversation and just a little good humored “trash talk” between competing teams on pizza and soda.

Event sponsors supported the party rooms, food, awards and the Green/Red laser tag bases and energizers. Also assisting were the Kiwanis Clubs of East Meadow, Farmingdale, Franklin Square and Merrick as well as PLG Mary Burns, PIN Electric and the Bowling Green K-Kids.

The K-Kid, Builders Clubber, Key Clubber, Circle Ker and Kiwanian with the highest hit ratio each received a medallion.

East Meadow High School Key Club walked away with the champions’ trophy based on their club’s overwhelming support of the fundraiser and their expert laser blasting.
