KPTC Leadership Committee Expands

Representatives from Builders Club and K-Kids are now included in the Kiwanis committee.

The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center (KPTC) Service Leadership Committee celebrated the start of its 5th service year by expanding to include representatives from Builders Club and K-Kids.

Originally, the KPTC Key Club Committee was formed to strengthen the involvement of Key Clubs from the downstate area in the mission of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center at North Shore-LIJ. Spearheaded by Key Club Governor Karen DeMaria and Division 6 Lt. Governor Robin Kornstein, the committee first met during the 2008-09 service year.

Kornstein quickly transformed the committee from a purely fundraising arm of KPTC into a vibrant group of Key Clubbers and Circle Kers that also furthered KPTC’s mission to prevent pediatric trauma through a partnership with the NYS Safe Kids Coalition.

At their July 19, 2012 meeting, the KPTC Service Leadership Committee welcomed two Builders Clubbers from the WT Clarke Builders Club and a K-Kid from the Bowling Green K-Kids as its newest committee members. The committee is currently seeking another K-Kid to represent our youngest branch of the K-family.

Also at the meeting, the committee decided to hold Safe Kids workshops at local craft fairs including the Nassau County Craft Fair in Eisenhower Park on September 1 and 2. The Safe Kids table is being donated by Fair Producer Alan Finchly, a member of the Levittown Kiwanis Club.

The committee agreed to assist the Bowling Green K-Kids in a boating safety service project at the Wantagh Park Boat Ramp. The K-family members will be distributing boating safety flyers provided by the US Coast Guard to boaters over two upcoming weekends.

The committee is also planning a Pancake Breakfast for KPTC at the Applebees Restaurant in Westbury.  While a date was not confirmed, the committee hopes to hold the breakfast in late September or early October.

The meeting concluded with the presentation of three $500 KPTC Service Leadership Scholarships.  Bob Cummo Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $500 each were awarded to Division Avenue Key Club IPP Jasmine Blennau and William Floyd Key Club Past Secretary Megan Melville. Due to the generosity of the Family of Scott Mazzio, a third $500 KPTC scholarship in memory of Scott was presented to NYD Key Club – Divison 6 IPLG Becky Hopkins.
