Rose-Marie Snyder, a 13 year-old eighth grader at Jonas E Salk Middle School in Levittown, organized a bowling fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at AMF Wantagh Lanes this past Friday.
Snyder wanted to raise money for prostate cancer research after her grandfather died following a three-year battle with the disease.
“I loved my grandpa and bowling and I combined the two to make one big event,” said Snyder, whose family was at the benefit as a tribute to her late grandfather.
The fundraiser featured prizes for the highest bowler as the top male and female scores under age 13. There were also about a dozen raffles at benefit donated from businesses around the area.
Some of the many businesses who contributed to the raffle included Friendly Cards and Gifts in Wantagh, Loews Movie Theatre in Levittown, Wantagh 5&10, Hemingway's American Bar & Grill in Wantagh, Adventureland in Farmingdale, Town Bagel of Wantagh, Wantagh Inn and Broadway Warehouse Liquors in Levittown.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes, R-Levittown, attended the fundraiser and presented Snyder with a citation. Murray and Hudes said they were impressed with Snyder’s dedication to the cause of fighting cancer.
“It’s tremendous to head-up an event," Murray said. "It takes organization and maturity and it’s for a great cause.”
“To spend a Friday night here for a great cause is a good example of a kid in the community and I am proud of her," Hudes said.
