The Warriors tie the best-of-three series with a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs Thursday.
Two of the best baseball players in Nassau County battled it out for nine innings Thursday - both on the mound and in the batter's box. Wantagh's Greg Welch and Island Tree's Mike Jeannetti both tossed 9 inning complete games and hit home runs, with Welch and Wantagh coming out the victor Thursday, 3-2. With the win, Wantagh ties the best of three game series at a game a piece, after falling in the first game 3-1. "[Jeannetti's] a great pitcher, he put it all out there. I put it all out there," Welch said. "Fortunately, I came out with the win." Island Trees got on the board first when Jeannetti hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Kyle Nigro. That 1-0 lead would prove to be short-lived. On the very first pitch the next inning, Welch …

East Meadow's doctor takes a closer look.
This week the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a report on the long term use of biphosponates-the main class of drugs prescribed to treat osteoporosis. Sold under various brand names (i.e. Fosamax, Boniva and Reclast) these medications are given at the time of diagnosis, but whether therapy should be indefinite or time limited is not clear. Osteoporosis, or “thinning of the bones” is a major health threat to millions of Americans. The prevalence of disease increases with age, particularly in women who have gone thru the menopause and have lost the hormonal environment that helps maintain bone health during their first decades of life. The main threat from the condition is fracture of the bones-hip, vertebral (back bone) and …

Bulldogs can clinch trip to semifinals with win Thursday against Warriors.
With Island Trees’ two top pitchers Mike Jeannetti and Matt Bowen unable to work in game one of Wednesday’s Nassau County Class A quarterfinal series at Wantagh, Mike Ahrens knew he needed to step up his game. The senior righty did just that tossing a complete-game seven-hitter in a 3-1 win that puts the Bulldogs one win away from the semifinals. “It was a battle all the way through,” said Ahrens, who was not in the Island Trees starting rotation at the beginning of the season. Ahrens was penciled in as the starter after Jeannetti and Bowen racked up plenty of innings in the Bulldogs' playoff loss at top-seeded Clarke Saturday and its victory over crosstown Levittown rival Division in an elimination game Monday. Wantagh avoided having to …

Schools celebrate their favorite poets during "Poem in Your Pocket Day."
In recognition of May as National Poetry Month, students throughout the Levittown School District celebrated their favorite poets during “Poem in Your Pocket Day.” At Gardiners Avenue Elementary School, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes, Levittown Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance Mark Flower, and many other guests read poetry to various classes during the day. Grossane reminded the students in Ms. Poulos’s class that poets often place meaning in their works. “Poems can be fun and silly, but sometimes they have a message or a moral,” he told the students as he read poetry from Jeff Moss’s The Butterfly Jar. Flower read “Mother Doesn’t Want a Dog” to first-grade students in …
A look at the history of Levittown.
Throughout the post-WWII years, it became something of a truism that the average Levittowner was from somewhere else. Brooklyn and the Bronx had been the more common, albeit hardly exclusive, points-of-origin. Elliot Willensky's nostalgic When Brooklyn Was the World ends with a fellow from 1950's Canarsie, Flatbush, or Park Slope packing up the car to go check out the new homes "out on the Island" as they used to say. "For most of us", Willensky observed, "that's how Brooklyn ended". How long Levittown remained peopled by folks from away is difficult to say because the Baby Boom quickly created a native-born population. Indeed, between 1947 and 1957, St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church celebrated an astonishing 7,345 baptisms. Very few …
