Historical Levittown

Levittownia: From Somewhere Else

A look at the history of Levittown.

Throughout the post-WWII years, it became something of a truism that the average Levittowner was from somewhere else. Brooklyn and the Bronx had been the more common, albeit hardly exclusive, points-of-origin. Elliot Willensky's nostalgic When Brooklyn Was the World ends with a fellow from 1950's Canarsie, Flatbush, or Park Slope packing up the car to go check out the new homes "out on the Island" as they used to say. "For most of us", Willensky observed, "that's how Brooklyn ended". How long Levittown remained peopled by folks from away is difficult to say because the Baby Boom quickly created a native-born population. Indeed, between 1947 and 1957, St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church celebrated an astonishing 7,345 baptisms. Very few …

I would think that people would want to know who these people are before elections. In this case running unopposed it wouldnt have changed things. BUT, had people been aware before hand perhaps someone else may have ran. Being on the BOE should not be about political or personal gain.   more ›

I was just pointing out what step 1 teacher would make over 70 k. I would think most are BA and get their masters after starting work. They are not hiring. Levittown Students Raise Awareness for Autism

Gardiners Ave. elementary school students recently participated in a number of activities.

With April being Autism Awareness Month, students at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School participated in a day of activities to bring awareness to autism. Third-grade students Anthony Vaughn and Jamie Church, both of whom have siblings with autism, gave presentations about this disorder to their classmates and over the loudspeaker. The day proceeded with students in grades K-2 reading age-appropriate books about autism. Those in grades 3-5 learned facts about the disorder and were asked to decorate and write autism facts on paper puzzle pieces, which were then displayed at the main entrance of the school. During lunch, students at both Gardiners Avenue and East Broadway Elementary Schools sold autism awareness bracelets and pins, raising…

Levittown Board of Education Candidate Profile: Kevin Regan

School board trustee is up for his second three-year term.

Town of Hempstead Deputy Commissioner Kevin Regan was elected to the Levittown School District Board of Education three years ago with hopes of bringing some positive change to the community he's called home for more than four decades. "If you want to see something change, you have to get involved," said Regan, a 41-year resident of Levittown. "We had budget difficulties that were looming and we knew it would become a problem eventually. Money was tight and the economy wasn't doing good." Regan joined the board just before some very vital changes, like last year's excessive lay offs and the introduction of a new superintendent. "Letting people go is the last thing you want to do but it seems to have corrected a lot in the district, and …
