Levittown Seaford Wantagh Sports is set to kick off mid-April.
Since 1954, the Levittown Seaford Wantagh (LSW) Sports League has provided an athletic outlet based around teamwork and community. LSW Sports League is now preparing for their annual spring season where hundreds of local children can participate in intramural kickball, t-ball, baseball and softball on both intramural and travel teams. "We offer an opportunity for kids to get together and learn how to play team sports," said league administrator Don Boyce. "Only a certain about of these kids will go into the travel part of our league and excel at these sports but our intramurals are for everyone." The intramural divisions at LSW are available for children ages 3-17. Up until age seven, the teams are grouped by family request. As they get …

Review a local business in our directory.
Paul Manton draws parallels from the past to the future in his weekly column.
What are the two most extraordinary historical events you have witnessed in your lifetime? Mine were the end of the Cold War and official dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991 and the Apollo XI landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969. The first is a significant example of social progress as the militarized totalitarian U.S.S.R. was dismantled peacefully. The second is a significant example of our technological progress because a man walked on the Moon within a dozen years of Sputnik. In many respects, the building of Levittown represents a hybrid of both technological and social progress provided that it's fairly judged within the context of the times. In 1940, for example, building a score of houses would have been …

A significant portion of the following was provided to Patch by Syntax, which issues press releases on behalf of the Levittown School District. Mildred Bowman, better known as “Ms. Millie,” is a lunch monitor at East Broadway Elementary School. Ms. Millie is very good at remembering numbers, which is a great skill to have when you have so many to remember. She is 87 years old, has been married to her husband for 65 years, and has been a Levittown resident almost 59 years. She grew up in Brooklyn, and moved to Levittown in 1953. She has three children, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The Levittown resident collected coats for a fifth straight year.
Lindsay Gruntorad's annual coat drive was a success this holiday season, as the Levittown resident collected a total of 619 coats. Gruntorad informed the Levittown Patch of the final total via email on Dec. 28. This was the sixth consecutive year she organized the coat drive, which she originally started as a Division Avenue High School student. Gruntorad donated 160 coats last year and set a goal of 200 for this year's drive, which was significantly eclipsed. Gruntorad, who now works at a funeral home in Queens, was profiled by the Levittown Patch in October. The story was later picked up by the Huffington Post. Gruntorad was also recently named one of Patch's "Most Influential People" in 2011.

Hundreds of local elementary school students got the chance to combine sports with learning Wednesday. Three schools in the Levittown School District took part in "What I Want To Be Day" on Wednesday morning prior to the Hofstra women's basketball team's special noon tip-off against Central Connecticut State in the New York Life Holiday Invitational at the Mack Sport Complex. Students at East Broadway Elementary School, Northside Elementary School and Summit Lane Elementary School spent two hours before the Hofstra-Central Connecticut State game learning about various careers such as business, science, communications, recreation and health.
