Purchase nearly doubles Long Island American Water's customer base in New York, making it the largest of its kind.
Long Island American Water, the Lynbrook-based water company that already serves portions of southwest Nassau County, became the largest investor-owned water utility in the state this week after aquiring several water systems from Aqua America. The new company will continue to serve Wantagh, Seaford, Merrick, Bellmore, Levittown, Massapequa Park, East Massapequa and parts of Glen Cove. Adding these new systems, which are located in Nassau, Washington, Westchester and Ulster counties and serve approximately 152,000 people, nearly doubles the LIAW's customer base in New York. Its parent company, American Water Works Company, Inc., paid $39 million in cash and assumed debt of $23 million, reports MarketWatch. LIAW also sold off eight of its…

Recent roadwork in the Nassau Mall parking lot has eliminated a number of spaces.
Roadwork in the Nassau Mall parking lot is causing frustration amongst shoppers who claim that on busier days, parking spaces are hard to come by. The largest portion of paving is being done in the northeast corner of the parking lot, from Weight Watchers north to Pet Smart. There is no work being done in front of Kohl's, one of the larger stores in the Nassau Mall, but the paving in the northeast corner has made it tougher to park in front of Kohl's. There is also work being done toward the center of the parking lot directly in front of Five Below, which extends south to the office buildings that are just east of Old Navy near the mall's main entrance. The paving in front of Five Below is closest to completion.

Full moon will be closest to Earth in nearly 20 years.
Grab your telescopes and cameras and look to the heavens Saturday night. That’s when we’re in for another “Super Moon.” Astronomers are saying that this Super Moon will be even more super than usual. “The last full moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993,” Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington D.C. told USA Today. This Super Moon (a phrase coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979) will appear especially large because the moment of perigee—when the moon is closest to the Earth in its monthly rotation—will coincide with the appearance of a perfectly full moon, Smithsonian points out. During last year’s Super Moon on March 19, 2011, for comparison, the perigee and full moon were 50 minutes apart. On …

Levittown Resident Rick Ekberg shares his thoughts on the proposed Crocus Lane project.
The following is from Levittown resident Rick Ekberg. A letter to the editor: A builder has currently filed plans with the Hempstead Town Board to construct several condominium units in our neighborhood. The first units are proposed to be constructed on the lot between Orchid Road, Blacksmith Road and Crocus Lane. These condos will house about 51 double and single units with parking for about 90 vehicles. In order for the builder to proceed with such a project, the board of appeals must rule in favor of such a development. If the lot is allowed to be re-zoned by the board of appeals, this will set a precedence to construct similar condos on the lot between Orchid Road, Woodcock Lane, Skimmer Lane and Heron Lane, which the same builder also…
A honorary ceremony will be held Armed Forces Day, May 19.
Funeral directors and veterans from areas around Nassau and Suffolk counties gathered at Long Island National Cemetery late last month to discuss the process of bringing unclaimed remains of local veterans to rest. The ceremony is set to take place at the Wyandanch Cemetery Saturday, May 19 -- Armed Forces Day. "People don't always retrieve the ashes of those cremated, especially many years ago, so we save them and become the guardians of them," said Beth Dalton-Costello, owner of Levittown's Dalton Funeral Home. "National cemeteries do not do funerals on weekends, so we had to send a letter to Washington in order to put this all together," Commander of Nassau County American Legion Andy Booth told Patch. According to Costello, Booth, a …
Developer looks to build 50 units at the former site of the Long Island Motor Parkway.
Update: May 5, 7:48 p.m. According to a town spokesman, the attorney representing Crocus Lane Estates has indicated that they will request an adjournment of the May 8 meeting with the Hempstead Town Board. However, the meeting is still on the town board calendar and a formal request for adjournment would have to be made to the town board. A company is looking to build a 50-unit senior housing development on the empty parcel of land located west of Crocus Lane in Levittown, but one thing might be standing in its way: the Long Island Motor Parkway. The parkway closed in 1938, but residents and the Levittown Property Owners Association (LPOA) would like the the remnants preserved, rather than built on. "I know some people in this audience …

Review a local business in our directory.
Posters on Patch think the project is a better fit elsewhere.
The proposal for a new assisted living facility at the North Village Green site is not proving to be a popular one with commenters on Patch. Readers have aired out complaints with the project in the comments section on several articles and on Facebook across several months. Many residents believe that the project does not fit in with the character of the village greens. "The greens have been important recreational anchors that were part of the original planning by Levitt and have served to enhance the quality of life and preserve and enhance property values.," said user Maureen Canty, commenting on an article on the project from February. "... A 100-resident facility and the ensuing traffic congestion and noise pollution will destroy the …
