Bulldogs can clinch trip to semifinals with win Thursday against Warriors.
With Island Trees’ two top pitchers Mike Jeannetti and Matt Bowen unable to work in game one of Wednesday’s Nassau County Class A quarterfinal series at Wantagh, Mike Ahrens knew he needed to step up his game. The senior righty did just that tossing a complete-game seven-hitter in a 3-1 win that puts the Bulldogs one win away from the semifinals. “It was a battle all the way through,” said Ahrens, who was not in the Island Trees starting rotation at the beginning of the season. Ahrens was penciled in as the starter after Jeannetti and Bowen racked up plenty of innings in the Bulldogs' playoff loss at top-seeded Clarke Saturday and its victory over crosstown Levittown rival Division in an elimination game Monday. Wantagh avoided having to …

Peer Leaders and ninth-grade class officers help raise $2,200 for John Theissen Children's Foundation.
Peer Leaders and ninth-grade class officers at Levittown's MacArthur High School recently hosted a skate-a-thon at United Skates of America in Seaford to raise money for the Wantagh-based John Theissen Children’s Foundation (JTCF). After a day at the skating rink, the students raised $2,200, which go toward the JTCF to directly benefit sick and underprivileged children on Long Island. Theissen, a MacArthur High School graduate, was recently presented with the check. While thanking the students, Theissen told his story of having a brain tumor at 17 years of age. He encouraged the students to stay healthy and to achieve academically. “You have to live your life to the fullest,” Theissen said. “Don’t let anything get in your way of …

The senator has secured more than $650,000 to help upgrade necessary radio equipment.
U.S. Senator Charles Schumer revealed Monday that he has secured more $650,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide 71 Nassau County Fire Departments and Volunteer Ambulance Corps (VAC) with updated radio equipment in order to meet a looming federal radio mandate. The mandate, set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013, requires that all emergency communications equipment operate on a new frequency that current communications equipment does not support. "This is a huge victory for Nassau fire departments that were set to get socked with huge fees to meet this federal mandate," Schumer said in a release. "Now, help is on the way – FEMA has agreed to pick up the tab, and Nassau taxpayers are spared the cost." The Nassau …

The Nassau County Legis., R-Levittown, is happy that the County is addressing a lot of questions that their plan for the precincts has raised.
Questions have surrounded the county's plan to re-organize the police department, despite details being outlined at a neighborhood watch meeting two weeks ago. Legis. Dennis Dunne, R-Levittown, has set out to find the answers. "Let’s address everything now before we move on with this, if in fact we do," he said. According to Dunne, adjustments are still being made to the plan that involves turning Levittown's Eighth Precinct into a Community Policing Center. The Eighth Precinct covers Levittown and far northern sections of Wantagh and Seaford. "As questions come out, and they’re valid questions, the administration appears to be addressing them and giving us a little bit of comfort with what the plan is." A major concern was that some of …

Police are trying to identify the source of the problem.
Police have shut down one lane on the southbound side of Wantagh Avenue to investigate what they are describing as a suspicious fuel spill. According to Nassau County Seventh Precinct officers, the source of the spill is unknown, and police set up flares to block the southbound right lane across from the new Wantagh Starbucks. The spill caused traffic backup on both sides of Wantagh Avenue, and sand trucks were dispersed to the scene to help contain the spill. "We are still looking into this," police added. This is a breaking news story, and Patch will provide more information as it's made available.

Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals votes to green light new water treatment system along Levittown-Seaford border.
A planned Navy water treatment facility along the Levittown-Seaford border has been given the green light by the Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) The Hempstead BZA voted to grant the Navy zoning immunity following a hearing this past Wednesday to construct six 20,000-pound Granular Activated Vessels enclosed within a 30-foot building on 670 Seamans Neck Road on land operated by Aqua NY. As a federal entity, the U.S. Navy was not subject to local zoning regulations but agreed to go before the Hempstead BZA to make sure the project was up to the town's standards. The project will feature large-scale versions of home filtration systems shown to reliably remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. VOCs, which have …

Planned new treatment system at Aqua NY's plant along Seaford-Levittown border
A planned new treatment system at Aqua NY’s Seamans Neck Road Water Plant along the Seaford-Levittown border is needed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have recently been detected in area water. Lora Fly, Remedial Program Manager for the Navy Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic, explained during an informational meeting held Tuesday evening about its project that the new treatment system will feature large-scale versions of home filtration systems shown to reliably remove VOCs from water. VOCs are chemical compounds based on carbon and hydrogen structures that are vaporized at room temperature and turn into an air contaminant. Fly said the source of the VOCs is linked to the nearby former Northrop Grumman …
