North Levittown Lanes Slated for Closure

Local bowling tradition will be continued at the South Levittown Lanes, which will remain open.

After 57 years in business, North Levittown Lanes has shut its doors for the last time.

The community institution, located on Schoolhouse Road, is just one of the two bowling centers in Levittown – both of which are owned by Frank Mormando.  He explained that the North Lanes bowling center can “no long produce what it used to produce.” With two alleys in the same town, Mormando is downsizing to South Levittown Lanes to continue to “fulfill the needs of the community.”

“We are sad to see it go, but due to the economy and the way business is today, again, two bowling centers in one town – it’s overkill,” he said.

As a business that has been part of the local culture since the dawn of Levittown itself, Mormando also stated that the community is certainly sad to see North Lanes close but is excited to have everything at the south location because they will be updating the equipment there. Just as the north and south of Levittown are different, Mormando explained, so are the bowling alleys and they each have distinct characteristics.

“People have history in North Levittown Lanes,” he continued. “Hopefully they realize that there is another entity on the other side of town that will fulfill all of their bowling needs.”

Levittown Chamber President Dean Baer explained that it is always sad to see a business go, especially in this type of economy. He continued by saying that the north bowling alley  “has employed thousands of Levittown kids” over the years.

“It is kind of bittersweet, but due to the circumstance and the type of business that it is, it is understandable,” Baer said. “The fact that it is Frank and that he has another location in Levittown, we know that he will still be able to add to the community.”

Mormando’s father, Nicholas, started the business and still owns the property. He said that his father, as the landlord, would be deciding what to do with the building and surrounding land.

Ready to continue the family tradition at the south location, Mormando said that he likes coming to work because it is “a beautiful thing.”

Wanting to serve the community, just in time for summer, Levittown South Lanes and PAL is offering a bowling bonanza pass to every kids under the age of 18. This entitles them to one free game and shoe rental everyday during the summer vacation. The card gets punched when the child uses the pass at the bowling alley.

“Every kid that comes in and signs up for it - doesn’t matter what grade or what school – we will give a free bowling pass,” Mormando said. “We have been running it for nine years now. It is very well received.”
