Expressions of Manhood

Expressions of manhood are too often echoes wrapped in shadow.  Lately everything from the NFL to political discourse speaks to image rather than reality.  I’m reminded of the coach who told us that the next 40 minutes would be the most important in our lives.  My fourteen year old mind considered, perhaps we might marry, have children, go to war?

Recent events in a sports locker room emphasize the dichotomy, hero worship and reality.  Is hazing bullying?  Is driving a teammate or opponent to distraction part of healthy competition?  I remember Jack Dempsey’s quote following defeat.  “I lost,” simple, to the point.  No need to create a scenario for hateful vengeance.  “I lost.”  What more is there to say?

What is a teammate, after all but another human being sharing an experience.  Rationalizing the premise that I can does not imply that I should.  The bond of friendship is born in competitive experience not immature fencing.  Crossing emotional red lines negate the intrinsic value of sport.  Team implies brotherhood.  Brothers bond, children bicker.

Why not show our young men and women how the game should be played?  We are all teachers.  Why leave the field to children?  The memories last a lifetime, third and ten, two minutes left.  I don’t need to insult my brother.  He was with me in the moment.  That moment remains mine and his forever.  It doesn’t need embellishment.
