Levittown and Island Trees Schools Closed for Rest of Week

Updated on Thursday at 12:43 p.m.

The Island Trees School District and the Levittown School District will both be closed on Thursday and Friday following the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Multiple Patch users said that Island Trees left messages via phone Wednesday afternoon, informing residents of the decision to keep schools closed.

"There are so many people without power and it won't be restored for some time," Island Trees Superintendent Charles Murphy told Patch. "We hope people can now go and find a place to stay for the weekend if needed."

On Wednesday, residents on the Levittown Patch Facebook page are reporting that the Levittown School District will be closed on Thursday, but said that no decision has been made yet about Friday. Officials told residents to check the Levittown Schools website for further updates.

On Thursday, multiple residents informed Patch on our Facebook page that Levittown schools will also be closed on Friday.

As of 12:45 p.m. Thursday, nearly all of Levittown is without power -  17,798 LIPA customers total and 679,908 across Long Island.

LIPA issued an updated statement:

"...the monumental task of debris removal and damage assessment is well underway. Significant efforts are also underway to repair the “backbone” of the electric system, which includes the high-voltage power lines and the substations that distribute power to local communities."

"A workforce of more than 5,000 strong is working around the clock and will continue to do so until everybody has power."

To report an outage to LIPA, call 1-800-490-0075 or text 'REG' to 695472 (myLIPA) and then 'OUT.' For more important emergency contacts, tips and links, click here
